The Underground Groundhand position is assigned to the Directional Drilling crew, and you will play a crucial role in supporting the installation of underground utilities by assisting with various drilling operations. You will work closely with experienced drillers and other crew members, learning the intricacies of directional drilling techniques and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The role involves operating machinery, performing ground preparation, and assisting in the maintenance and cleaning of equipment and tools.

The Underground Groundhand position is assigned to the Directional Drilling crew, and you will play a crucial role in supporting the installation of underground utilities by assisting with various drilling operations. You will work closely with experienced drillers and other crew members, learning the intricacies of directional drilling techniques and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The role involves operating machinery, performing ground preparation, and assisting in the maintenance and cleaning of equipment and tools.
Essential Functions:
- Follow safety rules and regulations to promote a positive safety culture
- Support drillers by handling materials and tools as needed during operations.
- Assist in the movement and transportation of drilling equipment to and from job sites.
- Perform routine maintenance and checks on drilling machinery and tools.
- Assist in the setup and operation of directional drilling equipment.
- Assists line crew with setting poles by shoveling or piking; fills anchor holes
- Clears undergrowth from right-of-way by using hand tools or saws in a safe manner
- Hand Digging, ditches/holes using hand tools
- Clean equipment, trucks, hand tools
- Keep work area clear and clean of debris
- Move debris & dirt, from one place to another using a shovel, rake, or other tools to remove excess material, and fill in holes
- Learn to operate power-driven machinery such as: jackhammer, tamper, & drills
- Site clean-up
Qualifications/requirements:
- Able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
- Work safely outside in various weather conditions
- Valid Driver's License
- High school diploma or GED
- 1 year utility experience (preferably in the construction industry)
- Able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License permit within 150 days of employment (Company paid training)
- Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required (storm or emergency work)
- Willing to work over-time when requested in support of storm or emergency work
- Must successfully complete a criminal background check and drug screen
