Your role and responsibilities
We are looking for a Software Engineer to join our team at ABB Oy Marine & Ports Division in Vuosaari, Helsinki. In this role, you will work on cutting-edge marine automation & control solutions, focusing on Azipod® propulsion control systems and other advanced technologies. You will be responsible for developing, testing, and commissioning control system software while collaborating with cross-functional teams in an international environment. This role offers the opportunity to participate in developing new technologies and products, improving test processes and simulations, and ensuring high-quality system performance. The position involves occasional travel (both in Finland and abroad) to support project execution. At ABB, you will be part of an innovative team with strong technical expertise and a supportive work environment. You will be mainly accountable for: • Developing and customizing software for automation and control systems, including PLC programming and HMI development • Working with Azipod® propulsion control systems, ensuring compliance with project requirements • Conducting internal testing, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), and commissioning to verify system functionality • Diagnosing and troubleshooting issues, providing support to electricians or feedback to product teams when rectifying errors • Ensuring software quality and functionality align with project specifications • Participating in the development of test processes and simulations to improve system performance • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including hardware and lead engineers, project managers, and R&D

Qualifications for the role
- B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Automation, Control, Electrical, or Software Engineering
- Expertise in PLC programming and debugging, with an understanding of the IEC 61131-3 standard
- Hands-on experience with control systems, including HMI development (both local panel solutions and larger control room systems)
- Ability to read, understand, and follow electrical schematics and familiarity with key communication protocols, such as OPC UA, Modbus, and CAN
- Strong problem-solving skills and proactivity in troubleshooting and system optimization
- Capability to follow and interpret function descriptions and test protocols during application development
- Fluency in English is necessary in the role
- Willingness to travel (approximately 20-50 days per year) for testing, commissioning, and customer support
- Previous experience in industrial automation or the marine industry is a plus and experience with drives, ABB 800xA, or other DCS systems is beneficial
