What will you do as a Commercial Manager - Battery Energy Storage?

As a Commercial Manager you are a crucial member in the rapidly developing market for Battery Energy Storage in a team that has the ability to develop and scale its activities in this market on a global scale. In your role you will drive the commercial strategy.
Our ambition is to develop a significant portfolio of battery energy storage assets (GW scale): up to ca. 2030 in durations of up to 4 hours, extending into Long Duration Energy Storage assets (>8 hours) in the medium to long term. We are investing (build-own-operate) in utility scale assets at critical locations in the High Voltage infrastructure in energy systems with an increasing penetration of intermittent renewable generation.
In these markets we have a crucial role in alleviating grid loads, matching supply and demand and reducing curtailment by timeshifting energy and stabilizing prediction errors. Your role will be a crucial element and you will be a driving force to maximize value generated from certain projects. For the immediate term we have several >100MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in our pipeline that we aim to bring to Financial Close, for which you will play a crucial part.

What do we expect / profile:

• Master's degree in Business or Engineering.
• Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in European energy markets, with a strong background in contracting traditional generation assets.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and execute offtake strategies for power generation portfolios.
• Preference for candidates with direct experience in developing offtake strategies for flexible assets, particularly Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), electrolyzers, or EV aggregators.
• Proven track record in structuring and negotiating long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and Contracts for Difference (CfDs).
• Strong knowledge of power markets (futures, day-ahead, intraday, ancillary services) and market drivers.
• Experience in applying and contracting optimization strategies to maximize earnings from day-ahead/intraday trading and dispatch for ancillary services.
• Understanding and vision on regulatory frameworks in key European markets (Netherlands, Belgium, Germany).
• Established network within the European energy sector, including TSOs, utilities, and large-scale power offtakers.
• Excellent negotiation, communication, and strategic portfolio management skills.
• Entrepreneurial mindset and results-driven approach.
• Fluency in English (written and spoken).
• Willingness to expand knowledge and experience to US and global markets.
• Legal/contracting experience.

Core Responsibilities:

• Strategic Commercial Leadership: Develop and execute comprehensive commercial strategies for Vopak's Battery Energy Storage (BES) business, driving growth and maximizing asset value.
• Strategic Network Development: Build and nurture a robust network of strategic offtakers, establishing strong contracting standards and fostering long-term partnerships.
• Offtake Tender Management: Lead and manage tender processes for offtake counterparties, ensuring competitive and favorable agreements for BES projects.
• Contract Lifecycle Management: Oversee commercial contract management for BES projects throughout the execution phase, ensuring compliance and optimal performance.
• Revenue Optimization: Drive revenue generation for operational Battery Energy Storage Assets, with a target exceeding EUR 100 million by 2030.
• Financial Stewardship: Take ownership of financial forecasting and variance reconciliation within the BES business segment, ensuring accurate and transparent financial management.
