Whitaker Construction, founded in 1953, has over 70 years of experience in the heavy civil and underground utility construction industry. Whitaker, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company, has become one of the largest contractors in the intermountain area with more than 600 employees and nearly 70 crews. We perform sanitary sewer, storm drain, culinary water, irrigation, earthwork, roadway construction, dams, landfills, natural gas pipelines, industrial piping, and telecommunication projects primarily in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon.

Job Summary:

A Natural Gas Superintendent is responsible for directing, scheduling, assigning, and coordinating all field work and site construction activities on natural gas construction projects. This role has direct responsibility to oversee all field personnel, sub-contractors, construction equipment needed on projects, materials, tools, and manpower requirements to meet established completion dates, and to maximize profitability. Additional responsibilities include training employees, appraising performance, rewarding and discipling employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Act as a representative of Whitaker Construction's culture and guiding principles.
  • Oversee natural gas crews in the safe installation and assembly of all aspects of underground utilities and natural gas projects.
  • Prioritize and manage safety and quality expectations in the field.
  • Read and interpret plans to understand the layout, sequencing, and method of pipe installations.
  • Ensure crew maintains a safe work environment that complies with OSHA/OQ standards and enforce the company safety policy.
  • Inspect work in progress and completed work to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications, and local codes.
  • Plans work methods, materials, equipment needs, inspections, and manpower in order to meet project schedules.
  • Forecasts the work schedule to identify possible issues and provides technical or scheduling recommendations to mitigate production issues.
  • Pre-survey job location and make calls to utility companies to locate utilities (Blue Stakes).
  • Properly follows all federal, state, and company environmental policies.
  • Maintain all paperwork as directed including timesheets, safety reports, as-builts, and daily production reports.
  • Complete performance reviews for employees in a complete and timely manner.
  • Lead, train, and mentor all employees.
  • Responsible for the overall quality of the finished product.
  • Maintain professional attitude with owners, inspectors, public, and company personnel.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, or other related discipline, is preferred.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years' experience supervising the installation of underground natural gas utilities, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in scheduling, ordering, field supervision, safety management, quality control, and budgeting all phases of underground natural gas utility construction.
  • A Class A CDL and Medical Card per Department of Transportation (DOT) standard is preferred.
  • Must have significant knowledge of Operator Qualifications for Dominion Energy.
  • Must be familiar with construction safety requirements (OSHA).
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal statutes and guidelines.
  • Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand contract specific plans, specifications, safety and quality standards, and effectively utilize all tools and equipment relevant to the work.
  • Ability to detect unsafe or hazardous conditions of equipment and work environment.
  • Strong leadership capability with internal drive to mentor and grow internal talent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with all levels from clients, management, workers, sub-contractors, and vendors.
  • Skilled at identifying project risks and proactively mitigating potentially negative outcomes.
  • Possess a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • Ability to manage in a team environment, as well as being able to work independently.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • A clean driving record is required.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to get to and from work.

Physical Requirements:
  • Able and willing to work long hours including day, night, weekend shifts as needed, and work outside of normal hours.
  • Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to travel to project sites that are typically within a 2-hour radius of the home office.
  • Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
