Qualifications

Required
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
  • Four (4) years of experience in air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, commercial steam/hot water boiler repairs, and general HVAC cleaning and repair maintenance, some of which shall have been in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Possession of a valid EPA-approved universal refrigerant recovery certification to include types I, II, and III.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
  • May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
  • Knowledge of methods and practices of the air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, commercial steam/hot water boiler, general HVAC maintenance trades, and of the properties, characteristics, and uses of related equipment, materials, and tools.
  • Skill in performance of the work and knowledge of local, state, and national codes.
  • Ability to assign and supervise subordinate employees.
  • Ability to carry out a maintenance and repair activity within established policies, plans, and requirements and to coordinate work with other shops and departments.
  • Ability to instruct and train subordinates in all phases of work and to assist them with work problems.
  • Ability to enforce safety and other regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
  • Ability to estimate costs of work performed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships.
Preferred
  • Completion of an acceptable apprentice-level HVAC training program.
  • Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Virginia master mechanical's license.
