PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hiring salary: $29.00/hour

This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs unit process optimization work related to the operation of

Binney Water Purification Facility. These duties include but are not limited to;

  • Operation of a state-of-the-art pilot plant and SCADA system
  • Perform bench scale testing to complement/enhance pilot plant operation. Operate Rapid Sand Small Column testing system to enhance pilot plant operation
  • Develops methods to optimize performance of advanced treatment processes
  • Review and analyze operational data to provide recommendations to full scale plant operations.
  • Evaluate and optimize removal of target contaminants, including PPCPs and PFAS, through carbon based advanced treatment (CBAT) using rapid small-scale column testing (RSSCT) and piloting
  • Explore alternate filter and adsorption media
  • Investigate alternative iron-based coagulants and polymer based coagulant aids.
  • Optimize the post-UV/AOP H2O2 residual and pH for biological filtration (BAF)
  • Prepare for Federal and State level changes regulations, policy, and guidance regarding contaminants, particularly for iodinated and brominated DBPs
  • Identify diversity of biological communities in biofilters.
  • Validate inactivation capabilities of the advanced treatment train for future direct potable reuse (DPR) considerations
  • Prepare clear and concise weekly technical summary or work performed
  • Maintain a detailed pilot logbook and maintenance record
  • Collect samples and use laboratory instrumentation to evaluate water quality parameters
  • Calibrate and validate online and benchtop instrumentation and maintain associated logs
  • Operate and maintain an RSSCT

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science or a directly related field preferred. Will consider undergraduate students in an above-listed or related program.

Experience:
  • Candidate must be actively enrolled in a degree program related to advanced potable water treatment. Laboratory, operations, or maintenance/mechanical experience a plus, but not required.

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of chemistry, biology, operations, or current principles and practices of advanced water treatment technologies and plant operations;
  • Data analysis;
  • Computer software including spreadsheets, graphics, and database applications.

Abilities:
  • Ability to maintain effective working relations with operational staff;
  • Prepare clear and concise technical reports;
  • Work well in a self-directed environment with support.

Skills:
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and report creation/presentation.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

Physical Demands:
  • Moderate to heavy physical work requiring ability to lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds with or without assistance;
  • Considerable walking and standing;
  • Speech communication to give instructions and provide technical direction;
  • vision to read gauges and instructions and operate equipment;
  • hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals.

Work Environment:
  • Works both indoors and outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions, noise, fumes, and chemicals; work may be performed in a confined space.

Equipment Used:
  • Operates tools, and mechanical and technological equipment and vehicles common to utility maintenance and construction;
  • Personal protection devices may be required.
