Introduction

Winnebago Mental Health Institute (WMHI), located near Oshkosh WI, is looking to hire a Power Plant Operator In-Charge to work 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm including some weekend and holiday hours as well as assisting with coverage for 1 st and 3 rd shift vacations as necessary. WMHI is a part of the Department of Health Services (DHS), Division of Care and Treatment Services (DCTS) and is a psychiatric hospital providing quality mental health services to children, adolescents, and adults.

Position Summary

As a Power Plant Operator-In Charge you are responsible for the following duties:

  • Operation of the Power Plant which includes 4 boilers operating at 125 psi, fired with natural gas or fuel oil. The Power Plant also operates (2) 750 kw diesel-driven generators.
  • Monitoring and maintaining the operation of the power plant which serves two state owned institutions (Winnebago Mental Health Institute, Wisconsin Resource Center), with steam, electricity, and compressed air on a year-round basis.
  • Making responsive and correct decisions affecting operation of the plant. Such decisions consist of but are not limited to the start-up or shutdown of equipment, the need for emergency repairs, and identifying the existence of emergency situations and implementing the necessary corrective actions.

Salary Information

The starting salary is $29.28 per hour (approximately $60,902 per year) plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probationary period is required.

Positions eligible for an additional $0.80 for hours worked between 6 pm to 6 am, and a weekend differential of $0.80 for hours worked between midnight Friday to midnight Sunday.

Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. This position is in pay schedule and range 03/16.

Job Details

All applicants who may be appointed to this position will be required to allow DHS to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled.

All appointees will be required to complete a pre-employment health assessment including a TB screen prior to their start date.

DHS does not sponsor work visas for this position, thus, in compliance with federal law, selected candidates will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.

This position has physical requirements which may include but are not limited to lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs, standing for long periods of time, walking up and down stairs frequently, climbing ladders, crawling, stooping, twisting, crouching, and kneeling. Applicants may be required to pass a physical evaluation to assess these requirements.

These positions require the ability to work in an environment that may include hot and humid temperatures, cold conditions and confined spaces.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following:

  • Experience operating high pressure boilers and their control systems. Experience may include bringing boilers online and offline, completing routine inspections, water treatment and testing, maintaining logs, making adjustments to computer systems and mechanical hardware, etc.

Well-qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:

  • Licensed boiler operator.
  • Training and/or experience operating electrical switch gear for emergency power.
  • Training and/or experience using diesel-driven generators for emergency power.
