Job Summary:
  • The Instrument Person operates and maintains survey instruments and measuring devices to assist the Field Crew Chief in completing different types of survey work assignments. This position also assists with implementing project survey policies, guidelines, and procedures. In this role, an employee will be expected to develop and demonstrate proficiency regarding the essential functions of the job found below.

Accountability and Duties:
  • Gathers field survey data through use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) methods
  • Sets up, adjusts, and operates surveying equipment, including electronic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment, in order to measure distances, elevations, and angles
  • Prepares field notes and drawings
  • Performs field surveying for roadway, bridges, pipeline, and flood control projects, including installing surveying construction stakes; tying out existing intersection ties, and locating or establishing vertical and horizontal control, right of way, monuments, corners, boundaries, and property lines.
  • Maintains field data records, survey project files, and indexing systems.
  • Maintains property inventory of assigned field equipment and secures when not utilizing.
  • Completes assignments accurately in a timely and efficient manner within budget while adhering to safety rules.

Required Qualifications, Licenses, & Registration:
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Must successfully complete drug screening and background check, including 7-year criminal history check and Motor Vehicle Record check.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must possess high school diploma.
  • Must be able to perform duties for extended periods in various terrains and climates including adverse weather conditions as necessary.
  • Available to travel overnight 50-75% of the time including working nights and weekends to complete a project as necessary.
  • Possess and demonstrate outstanding and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Must be fluent in the English language.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Physical Demands:
  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
