Description
The purpose of this classification is to perform administrative and supervisory work in the installation, construction, maintenance, repair of gas lines and related components of the Gas Distribution System. This position is subject to 24-hour call.
Examples of Duties
Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff: develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; appraises performance of subordinates; trains and evaluates staff; acts on employee problems; provides input regarding performance appraisal and personnel actions (transfers/promotions, discipline, termination, and salary increases);
Coordinates daily work activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; prepares and issues work orders; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work and initiates corrective action where necessary; consults with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise; and ensures crews have sufficient personnel, equipment, and materials allocated to perform the work required.
Coordinates and oversees the restoration of gas during outages; schedules and coordinates planned outages; contacts commercial, residential, and industrial customers regarding planned outages.
Supervises and conducts gas pressure and volume requirements.
Performs routine inspections of the gas distribution system to determine required maintenance.
Confers with distribution personnel on gas line and regulator stations.
Monitors and implements precautionary work methods and safety equipment to ensure safety of work crews and the public; conducts safety meetings with employees to ensure compliance to all applicable State and Federal rules and regulations.
Coordinates the maintenance of department vehicles.
Prepares, processes, and/or maintains necessary paperwork and reports required by department policies, and procedures.
Consults with vendors, engineers, and technicians concerning gas products; participates in making decisions concerning products used by the department; monitors products to ensure compliance with specifications and for quality control purposes.
Receives, answers, and remedies any difficult customer complaints or problems that cannot be handled by subordinates; keeps necessary records and makes required reports.
Acts as Superintendent of Gas Distribution in the absence of same; performs other related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
High School diploma or GED; supplemented by seven (7) years progressively responsible experience in the construction, maintenance, and repair of a gas distribution system; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification. Must obtain certifications as required by the Office of Pipeline Safety within six months of hire. Will be required to obtain and maintain other certifications and licenses as determined necessary by the department.
