Position Description
The Controls Retrocommissioning (RCx) Technician will support EIP's commercial and industrial retrocommissioning programs by conducting site assessments and optimizing building automation system (BAS) performance in existing facilities. This role focuses on identifying and implementing low-cost operational improvements that enhance energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with HVAC and controls systems, a deep understanding of building operations, and a passion for applying technical expertise to improve energy performance in real-world environments.

The Controls Retrocommissioning (RCx) Technician will support EIP's commercial and industrial retrocommissioning programs by conducting site assessments and optimizing building automation system (BAS) performance in existing facilities. This role focuses on identifying and implementing low-cost operational improvements that enhance energy efficiency and occupant comfort.

Objectives of this Role
- Identify Energy-Saving Opportunities: Analyze BAS and HVAC system data to uncover inefficiencies and propose control strategies that reduce energy consumption.
- Field Assessment and Testing: Conduct on-site evaluations, functional performance testing, and controls diagnostics in commercial and industrial facilities.
- Optimize System Operations: Recommend and support implementation of operational improvements such as scheduling adjustments, setpoint changes, and control logic updates.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with building operators, engineers, and program partners to ensure alignment on findings and recommendations.
- Reporting and Documentation: Create concise reports summarizing issues identified, energy savings potential, and proposed solutions.
- Project Execution Support: Assist in overseeing the implementation of recommended measures and verify their performance post-installation.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities
- Conduct on-site assessments of BAS and HVAC systems using diagnostic tools and trend data analysis.
- Review and interpret control system programming, sequences of operation, and trend logs.
- Coordinate and perform functional testing of key systems to validate current performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop retrocommissioning plans and contribute to the development of scopes of work for contractors.
- Document findings and prepare clear, actionable reports for building owners and facility managers.
- Collaborate with program engineers and implementation teams to deliver consistent, high-quality services.
- Maintain communication with facility staff throughout the investigation and implementation process.
- Track energy savings, implementation status, and maintain detailed records in program databases.
- Stay current with building automation system technologies and industry best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Associate degree or technical training in HVAC, mechanical systems, building automation, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
- Experience: At least 3 years of experience working with building automation systems, HVAC service, or energy efficiency projects.
- Technical Knowledge: Proficient in interpreting BAS trend data, sequences of operation, and control logic. Familiar with major BAS platforms such as Johnson Controls, Trane, Siemens, or Honeywell.
- Project Support Skills: Ability to coordinate fieldwork and collaborate with contractors, building staff, and technical teams.
- Communication Skills: Clear and professional communication skills with the ability to explain technical findings to non-technical stakeholders.
- Analytical Skills: Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify and quantify operational improvements.
- Travel: Willingness to travel locally for site visits (up to 25%).
Preferred Qualifications
- Retrocommissioning certification (e.g., BCxA, NEBB, ACG) or controls certification.
- Experience in utility-sponsored energy efficiency programs or building commissioning.
- Familiarity with energy modeling, savings estimation, or M&V.
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification.
- Experience with data loggers, diagnostic tools, and advanced metering systems.
