Context
The Expertise Center (EC) Quantitative Research and Modeling (QRM) within S&EM is a team of around 100 quantitative analysts and data scientists. Its mission is to provide advanced quantitative expertise to various Business Platforms (BP) of S&EM. The data scientist sought here will be part of the "Short Term Trading" team of QRM (approximately 10 people) and will be fully dedicated to the BP Power Trading & Commercial (PT&C).
Role
The data scientist will be focused on the activities related to the CWE (i.e., Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands) short-term power markets (i.e., day-ahead, intraday, imbalance). While the core of this role is deeply technical and delivery-focused, a portion of the expected responsibilities will involve overseeing project progress, ensuring alignment with business goals and coordinating with cross-functional teams. In their hands-on activities, the successful candidate will leverage large amount of data using statistical tools, machine learning and state-of-the art quantitative models to deliver analysis and tools that have a concrete impact on the business, including:

- Prediction of relevant power market signals (e.g., volumes, prices)
- Asset (e.g., battery) optimization
- Trading strategies and algorithms
The daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Contributing to the continuous development of improvement of optimization and trading models and tools, as well as leveraging large volumes of data to provide market insight to relevant BPs
- Tracking and reporting on project milestones, risks and deliverables, as well as coordinating with relevant stakeholders to ensure project alignment with cross-functional teams (e.g., on planning activities or resource allocation issues)
- Establishing contact with different stakeholders, e.g., traders - to understand their business needs and propose solutions -, analysts - to exchange about ideas, therefore leveraging on the knowledge from peers - and relevant IT teams - to align on topics related to architecture, deployment, etc.
Sought skillset
- Experience with statistical models, data science techniques (and optimization models) ;
- Good understanding of the energy business and power markets ;
- Demonstrated coding skills with Python ;
- Familiar with version control systems (git), software development (Azure DevOps, Github Actions) ;
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain and convey concise messages about complex issues.
- University degree (MSc, PhD) in Computer Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, etc.
- 5+ years of professional experience in a relevant technical role.
- Working language is English
