Job Description:

Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc., (AMA) is seeking to hire Deployable Solar Array Subject Matter Expert for our Hampton, Virginia location. The individual selected for this position will work off-site and on-site at NASA Langley Research Center supporting the Lunar Surface Solar Array Structures Group at NASA Langley Research Center. This is a casual part-time position.

This Research Activity focuses on preliminary design and analysis of these deployable or erectable lunar surface solar array structures that must be lightweight, densely packaged for launch, deployed and retracted several times over a 10-year lifetime, rotate to track the Sun around the horizon, and be transportable by either an integrated or attached vehicle. A principal emphasis is structural analysis for 10 kW vertical solar arrays that are elevated from 10 m up to 100 m rather than to only 10 m.

Job duties include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct studies of conceptual lunar surface solar array structures, which includes design and analysis of test articles and testing of advanced materials and structures.
  • Conduct structural analyses and design studies including development of classical structural design and analysis models and optimization algorithms.
  • Support planning for the development and testing of solar array structural concepts, arrangement, and design definitions.
  • Analyze data and report observations regarding measured performance as compared to analytical predictions.
  • Produce research software prototypes and publications in relevant peer-reviewed conference papers and presentations, journal papers, technical manuscripts, and project reports.
  • Travel to scientific conferences and workshops as requested.
  • Deliver text documents in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or PDF format, and software as source code and executables.

Requirements:
  • Must be a Subject Matter Expert in Deployable Solar Arrays with experience working with the Lunar Surface Solar Array Structures Group at NASA Langley Research Center.
  • Must have experience with the user-written scripts and spreadsheets written in Mathematica and Microsoft Excel.
