The Opportunity:
We are currently seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Technical Adviser to support configuration management activities within a leading Defence program. Based in Melbourne and working on a part-time basis, this role plays a critical part in ensuring the integrity and traceability of engineering data and artefacts across complex systems.
As part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will advise on best-practice configuration management principles, maintain baseline control, and ensure compliance with relevant Defence standards and frameworks.
The Principal Technical Professional serves as a strategic leader and expert contributor, driving innovation and ensuring technical excellence across projects. This role is pivotal in shaping engineering direction, fostering collaboration between teams, and influencing organisational outcomes through technical insight and leadership. Acting as a key technical ambassador, the role supports the long-term success of engineering initiatives and aligns technological solutions with business goals.

Responsibilities:
- Provide expert technical advice and support for Configuration Management (CM) activities across Defence acquisition and sustainment projects.
- Develop and implement CM plans, processes, and tools in line with Defence standards (such as ASDEFCON, ISO 10007, or MIL-STD-973).
- Maintain Configuration Items (CIs), support configuration status accounting, and facilitate Change Control Boards (CCBs).
- Ensure traceability of documentation and data across system lifecycles.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders, subcontractors, and government representatives to maintain compliance and support system assurance objectives.
- Support engineering reviews, audits, and certification processes with accurate CM records and artefacts.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of CM systems and documentation practices.
As the ideal candidate you will bring:
- Previous experience in a technical advisory role within the Defence industry is essential.
- Relevant qualifications in Engineering, Systems Management, or a related technical discipline.
- Demonstrated expertise in Configuration Management practices, including tools such as Teamcenter, Windchill, or IBM Rational.
- Strong understanding of Defence acquisition frameworks, especially within the CASG/One Defence Capability System environment.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and system design documentation.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- High attention to detail and structured documentation capabilities.
