Job Description

This position is responsible for supervising and performing specialized duties in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
Examples of Duties
• Monitor, operate and maintain the chemical feeds, instrumentation and control systems as necessary to ensure the facilities are operating efficiently.
• Provides leadership and mentoring to Plant Operators; expands leadership experience and broadens operational experience to increase knowledge, skills, and abilities in support of development toward the Supervisor position.
• Assists the Superintendent and Supervisor in setting guidelines and standards for the treatment process.
• Mentors the Operators in analyzing and reviewing operational adjustments based on water quality lab results and SCADA trending data to optimize treatment processes; ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations and safe work practices.
• Assists the Supervisor in implementation of safety program including training sessions, Standard Operating Procedures, safety inspections, and Safety Data Sheets.
• Prepares compliance reports; specializes in analyzing new regulations and requirements for implementation at the plant.
• Research treatment techniques, products and supplies to improve operational efficiencies or controls.
• Provides assistance and support to other divisions and departments as assigned.
• Responds to after-hours emergencies.
• Monitors the SCADA system and adjusts treatment operations to ensure proper plant operations.
• Collects samples; performs laboratory analyses to ensure that treatment facilities are operating efficiently; carries out corrective actions based on chemistry and biology of plant operations and regulatory requirements.
• Maintains chemical analysis records; prepares operations and maintenance logs, records, and reports, including required local, state, and federal reports.
• Operates equipment to control water flow and maintain proper operating levels.
• Maintains, calibrates, and repairs a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment, including pumps, motors, controllers, valves, charts, and plant instrumentation.
• Services, maintains, operates, and repairs facilities and equipment, including large-scale pumping devices, chemical feed systems, storage facilities, and related equipment.
• Reads and interprets plans, maps, and specifications.
• Makes rounds of plants; reads gauges and meters; records readings.
• Maintains plant facilities;
• Attends leadership, management, operator certification, and other required training classes.
• Ensures compliance with safe work practices.
• Performs related duties.
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of high school followed by a specialized five-year training program and state testing resulting in a Class IV state certification for the wastewater treatment plant as appropriate.
• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with four to five years' experience or service.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a North Dakota Class IV certified license for wastewater treatment or distribution as appropriate.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
