About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [SC00]

The Manager has oversight into the planning, procurement, and management of fuel resources for FirstEnergy. Is responsible for developing and implementing strategic fuel supply plans and optimizing fuel procurement processes to ensure the uninterrupted supply of fuel meets operational demands. Works closely with cross-functional teams for analyzing market trends, assisting with unit dispatch strategy, managing fuel contracts, and executing our unit capacity offer strategy. Expertise and leadership are key components for safeguarding efficient fuel operations and managing prudent costs for our customers to allow for regulatory recovery. Testifies to our fuel procurement, generation dispatch strategy and execution in WV Expanded Net Energy Cost filings.

This role will be onsite at the FirstEnergy Headquarters located in Akron, OH.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement comprehensive fuel supply strategies and plans to meet operational requirements while minimizing fuel costs.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (such as operations and finance) for accurate forecasting and planning based on business needs and market conditions.
  • Evaluate fuel suppliers, negotiate contracts, and maintain relationships in support of reliable fuel supply and favorable terms.
  • Keep apprised of industry regulations, compliance standards, and environmental policies related to fuel procurement and supply.
  • Implement fuel risk management strategies to mitigate price volatility and minimize financial impacts and in alignment with guidance from the Commodity Risk Practice.
  • Optimize fuel logistics and transportation processes to reduce costs and maintain timely delivery to operational sites.
  • Prepare and monitor the annual fuel budget and long-range plan.
  • Evaluate and implement dispatch strategies to support unit optimization and budgeted volumes.
  • Manage the capacity position for Mon Power's generation fleet.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to fuel supply, such as fuel consumption, costs, and inventory levels.
  • Leading and assigning goals to promote team development and process improvements. Educating and directing others on technical subject matters.
  • Building relationships and credibility with internal and external customers.
  • Testifies before regulatory groups (State Commissions, FERC) and serves as the lead witness for ENEC hearings.

Qualifications include:
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, Engineering, Supply Chain Management, or related field.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in fuel procurement, supply chain, business, or economics.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent negotiation and contract management skills to secure favorable fuel supply agreements.
  • In-depth knowledge of fuel markets, pricing mechanisms, and industry trends.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal stakeholders, fuel suppliers, and industry regulators.
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of Compliance and PJM offer rules.
  • Expertise in fuel logistics and industry regulations.
  • Management and leadership skills to direct staff involved with technical and analytical work.
  • Understand the best practices and techniques for addressing customer concerns.
  • Ability to deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed
