The Lead Researcher performs a variety of basic laboratory research tasks determined by the field and scope of the particular research project/study. Also, performs tasks related to the research project independently, but within specific guidelines which are subject to review by supervisor and/or other research staff.

This is an exciting opportunity to play an important role to in the Brain PACT (Pediatric Accelerator of Cures for Tumors) Initiative. A critical component of high-quality pediatric brain tumor research is founded on experiments that directly study patient tumor samples or use state-of-the-art tumor models derived from patient tumors. The lab of Suzanne Baker in the Department of Developmental Neurobiology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking a Lead Researcher to develop 3D in vitro cultures and in vivo xenograft models directly from patient pediatric brain tumor tissue as part of the Brain PACT Initiative. This important activity will create essential new model systems for pediatric brain tumor research that will be leveraged for discovery science and preclinical testing by multiple members of the Neurobiology and Brain Tumor Program within the St. Jude Comprehensive Cancer Center. To maximize the knowledge gained through research with this precious material, this position may also process tumor tissue to provide fresh cells to research laboratories for advanced molecular studies.

The ideal candidate shows great attention to detail, is rigorous, technically skilled, and experienced with tissue culture techniques. Experience with brain tumor and/or normal neural stem cell cultures, or establishment of in vitro cultures from tissue is preferred. Experience with xenografts or in vivo models involving brain development or tumorigenesis is also advantageous.

Candidates must be highly motivated, well-organized, keep meticulous records and work effectively independently or as part of a team. A collaborative attitude is essential.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Develop and perform procedures using established or modified techniques/protocols
  • Implement new but established protocols without individual training
  • Troubleshoot experiments and identify anomalies in own data
  • Consistently monitors current literature and trends within field
  • Accurately record experimental procedures and data
  • Prepare and report results/ data leading to posters, presentations, or publications
  • Provide guidance to less-experienced team members
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific area is required

Minimum Experience:
  • 5+ years of research experience is required
  • 3+ years of experience is required with a Master's degree
  • No prior experience required with a PHD
  • Strong knowledge and experience in understanding and application of underlying principles related to techniques being performed
  • Experience in R&D methods and processes in lab setting, and execution of research projects for the laboratory preferred
  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role

Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $60,320 - $105,040 per year for the role of Lead Researcher - Pediatric Brain Tumor Model Generation.
