I. Purpose of Job

Repairs and maintains water, reclaimed water and sanitary sewer infrastructure.

II. Essential Job Duties

A. Repair water infrastructure
  • Repairs and maintains water, sanitary sewer and reclaimed water infrastructure such as water, reclaimed water and sanitary sewer service lines and mains, fire hydrant, meters, water valves, manholes, lift station and booster station components.
  • Locates water, reclaimed water and sanitary sewer infrastructure.
  • Performs maintenance activities such as cleaning and flushing of water, reclaimed water and sanitary sewer lines.
  • Installs water, reclaimed water, and sanitary sewer taps

B. Maintains and transports equipment
  • Prepares and maintains work vehicle with parts and equipment needed to perform daily assignments.
  • Loads and unloads all equipment for transportation to worksites.
  • Cleans and maintains all equipment and work areas.

III. Other Job Duties

Performs other job duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
  • Troubleshooting, maintenance, repair and installation of Sensus water meters and those meter-reading necessities including AMI equipment, meter-reading handhelds, software updates for FieldLogic and their command links, MXU, etc.
  • Flagging traffic at worksite.
  • On-Call Designation: This position is considered an On-Call eligible position and rotation on an On-Call team is required.
  • May operate lawn mower and weed eater to maintain right of ways
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities to assist other employees in the department as required or as assigned.

IV. Primary Job Challenges

Primary challenges of this position include working around road traffic and maintaining a high level of safety.

V. Equipment Operated

Operates equipment such as air compressor, pipe saw, asphalt saw, and dump truck

VI. Key Competencies Required
  • Job Content Knowledge:

Has thorough knowledge of the policies, procedure, and activities of the City and water and sewer line installation and repair practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Utility Service Worker. Is knowledgeable of water and sewer line maintenance and installation practices necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities. Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology, principles, and methods utilized within the department.
  • Language Skills:

Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence. Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Mathematical Skills:

Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning Skills:

Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. In decision making, some choices are known while others may need to be identified. Some reliance on precedent. Interpret a variety of complex instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Teamwork:

Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions. Provides input into identifying and solving problems. Anticipates need of others for information about job tasks and work environment and provides it to them in a timely manner. Willingly assists others with job tasks when appropriate.

VII. Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires the incumbent to:
  • Must remain in a stationary position 25% of the time.
  • Regularly move around different worksites.
  • Constantly operates equipment or machinery such as air compressor, pipe saw, asphalt saw, and dump truck
  • Frequently positions self to maintain work area and items needed to complete daily tasks.
  • Regularly communicates information and ideas so others will understand, exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Occasionally ascends/descends ladders.
  • Regularly moves/transports up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally moves/transports up to 100 pounds.

Work Environment: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires:

Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions (non-weather).
  • Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions

The work environment is very loud (examples: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert)

Minimum Requirements

VIII. Qualifications

Education and Experience:

The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a High School Diploma or GED, plus two to three years of water/wastewater system maintenance related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Certifications/Licenses:

Commercial Driver's License Class B obtained within 1 year of hire date
  • Traffic flagging Certification obtained within 1 year of hire date
