To support its expanding portfolio, Jupiter Power is seeking a Director of Energy Management who will be responsible for management of a Qualified Scheduling Entity (QSE) desk along with associated processes and systems, to support the daily trading and dispatching operations of Jupiter's battery energy storage systems (BESS) portfolio, with an initial concentration in ERCOT. This individual will have the opportunity to make a quantifiable impact on company P&L working in Jupiter's front office alongside traders, real-time operators, analysts, regulatory staff, and data science team. This position will be part of a growing Trading desk managing operating assets in ERCOT with expansion into CAISO, PJM, MISO, NYISO and NEPOOL.

Regular duties include (i) responsibility for desk activities associated with Level 4 QSE participation in ERCOT, including timely management of all market submissions and ISO-required communication, (ii) implementing/developing internal processes for actions and procedures to comply with QSE market participation requirements, (iii) supporting the Trading/Dispatching team to understand & implement new market rules and regulations that impact portfolio operations, (iv) training junior real time traders on market operations and energy management, (v) managing relationship with the MMS vendor to support the trading and dispatch of BESS assets in the Day-Ahead Energy, Real-Time Energy and Ancillary Service Markets and (vi) supporting initiatives to advance internal proprietary tools for scheduling and dispatch decision-making in the Real Time market.

Key Responsibilities

QSE Management
  • Apply in depth ISO/ERCOT market operations knowledge to manage QSE activities related to market submissions, ISO-required communications, and real-time response to market events.
  • Lead the implementation/development of procedures and guidelines for the QSE desk and wider Trading team to fulfil the requirements of a Level-4 QSE in ERCOT, in accordance with Jupiter Power Risk Policy and to comply with any QSE operations requirements under third party agreements.
  • Ensure coordination between QSE desk and Jupiter SCADA team to identify and troubleshoot communication issues between the site equipment, internal data management systems, and third-party partners such as the TO or the ISO.
  • Track applicable market rules to ensure that Jupiter's market operations comply with ISO protocols and/or recommend improvements in internal procedures, including working with internal compliance group to ensure that real-time processes adhere to PUC & NERC rules.
  • Primary point of contact to lead implementation of ERCOT RTC+B market design changes (Real-Time Co-Optimization + Batteries) in Jupiter's internal systems and procedures.
  • Manage the relationship with Jupiter's MMS vendor to ensure QSE systems functionality, including troubleshooting of issues and scoping of system requirements.
  • Maintain a relationship with Jupiter's ISO Client Representative to support asset onboarding and ongoing support for asset operations and reporting.

Portfolio Management
  • Collaborate with Trading team colleagues to devise asset-optimization strategies to maximize portfolio revenue and support the implementation of real-time BESS trading & bidding strategies in adherence with risk policy guidelines.
  • Work internally with the Regulatory team, Trading/Dispatching team, Settlements team and externally with System Operators to understand BES participation in the market and find creative solutions to changing market structures.
  • Manage daily real-time operations processes to ensure that trading and scheduling decisions are executed to satisfy energy and ancillary service obligations and to manage capacity (state of charge) in compliance with ISO rules while maximizing revenue capture rates.
  • Implement real-time communication processes with Field Operations staff and Jupiter Remote Operations regarding asset availability and outage management.
  • Work with Jupiter SCADA team, ISO personnel, and the Jupiter Trading team to facilitate the commissioning of new sites and ensure they are properly set up for full market participation.
  • Assist internal Data Science team to advance inhouse tools for BES portfolio management and real-time operations support in adherence with market operations requirements

Requirements

  • Five or more years in ERCOT power market operations such as control room operations, power trading, generation scheduling, energy manager or asset management.
  • Experience in managing a team of traders or operators within the energy management sector.
  • Working knowledge in one or more ISOs preferred (ERCOT, CAISO, WECC, SPP, MISO, PJM, IESO, NYISO, ISONE)
  • A degree(s) in finance, economics, math, electrical theory, electrical power distribution, electrical power generation, or relevant field
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a high stress environment while managing time in sometimes rapidly changing situations
  • Demonstrates high standards in risk management, performance management, relationships with relevant 3rd parties and clients, communication, analysis, decision making, and legal & regulatory compliance
  • Self-starter with a high comfort level with fast-moving organizations, with the curiosity and enthusiasm to innovate and formulate new ideas and to bring the best out of co-workers.
