You'll own the estimating lane for DFW, driving accurate, on-time bids and value-engineered solutions that win work and protect margin. This is a build-and-scale role with clear impact and growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the bid cycle end-to-end: scope review, quantity takeoffs, vendor quotes, pricing strategy, proposal packaging, and handoff to operations.
- Read plans/specs like a pro: water/sewer/storm (AWWA/ANSI/TxDOT/Muni specs), civil details, addenda, alternates, and special conditions.
- Perform precise takeoffs for DI/PVC/HDPE pipe, MJ & flanged fittings, valves, hydrants, services, restraints, appurtenances, meter vaults, backflow, and related materials.
- Source and negotiate with vendor partners to secure competitive, compliant quotes; document inclusions/exclusions and lead-time risks.
- Build winning proposals: clear scopes, alternates, VE options, and clarifications that reduce risk and increase award probability.
- Drive handoff excellence: deliver clean submittal packages and kickoff notes so inside sales/ops can execute flawlessly.
- Protect the number: monitor margin leakage risks (freight, substitutions, concessions), and recommend adjustments before orders are booked.
- Be the expert at the table: support contractors and the sales team with product equivalencies, VE ideas, and spec interpretations.
- Continuously improve: refine assemblies, price books, and estimating templates; share lessons learned to sharpen the next bid.
What You Bring
- 3-5+ years' waterworks estimating (distribution or contractor) with strong familiarity across DI/PVC/HDPE, valves/hydrants, restraints, services, and vault assemblies.
- Proficiency in takeoff tools (Bluebeam Revu, PlanSwift or similar), Excel (lookups, pivots), and ability to navigate ERPs/CRMs (Epicor Eclipse experience is a plus).
- Deep spec savvy: AWWA/ANSI/NSF, municipal standards, submittal requirements, and "equals/approved" processes.
- Commercial instincts: you understand bid strategy, risk, and margin-and you know when to push, pause, or propose an alternate.
- Owner's mindset: bias to action, low-ego collaboration, and the ability to prioritize when the board lights up.
- Communication that lands: crisp scopes, clean proposals, and confident conversations with contractors, engineers, and vendors.
Nice to Have
- Vendor network across major manufacturers and reps in Texas.
- Experience supporting municipal term contracts and large private site-utility projects ($50K-$1M+).
- Basic AutoCAD viewer skills for detail checks.
- Submittal building experience and post-award project support.
How We Measure Success (First 6-12 Months)
- On-time bid rate: ≥98% with complete scopes and documented assumptions.
- Accuracy: variance between estimate and buyout within agreed thresholds.
- Hit rate & margin: improved award percentage and protected margins vs. baseline.
- Supplier leverage: multi-quote coverage and documented VE wins.
- Operational handoff: zero "scope surprise" escalations post-award.
Why Winston-Cox
- Entrepreneurial runway: your ideas move from whiteboard to workflow, fast.
- Impact and visibility: your estimates directly shape revenue and customer loyalty.
- Competitive pay: strong base + performance incentives tied to win rate/margin quality; meaningful growth path.
- Benefits that back you: health, PTO, holidays, and gear to do your best work.
- Culture built for builders: low red tape, high trust, and a team that has your back.
