An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Waste Planning team as a Wastewater Treatment Planning Engineer, where you will play a pivotal role as the asset owner for the wastewater treatment.

This position sits at the heart of our wastewater capital investment programme, ensuring that all delivery activities are aligned with:
  • Strategic objectives for long-term infrastructure resilience
  • Regulatory standards set by Ofwat and other governing bodies
  • Customer expectations for service quality and environmental stewardship
What you'll do

As a Wastewater Treatment Planning Engineer, your duties include:
  • Strategic Planning & Investment.
  • Wastewater Treatment Investment Plan: Contribute to shaping a five-year plan that aligns with long-term goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Cost-Benefit Focus: Ensure investments are financially sound and technically justified.
  • Regulatory & Compliance Support.
  • Ofwat Submissions: Assist in preparing regulatory documentation and liaising with auditors.
  • Technical Oversight & Programme Management.
  • Monitor the associated capital delivery programmes; many sub-programmes have Ofwat financial performance commitments.
  • Project Review Meetings: Participate in adjudicating design reviews to balance compliance, cost, and customer service.
  • Design Standards Compliance: Review project designs to ensure they meet internal standards and affordability criteria.
  • Knowledge of wastewater or sludge treatment processes (e.g. design of treatment systems, hydraulic analysis and understanding of computer hydraulic modelling)
  • Stakeholder Engagement.
  • Internal Teams: Collaborate closely with Delivery, Operations, and Development teams.
  • Planning & Documentation.
  • Brief Writing: Draft clear, value-driven briefs for technical solutions.
  • Plan Development: Assist in the preparation of business plans and drainage and wastewater management plans (DWMP), National Environment Programmes (WINEP) and Long-Term Delivery Strategies (LTDS), together with submissions to Ofwat and other regulators (e.g. DEFRA).
What you'll need
  • Analytical Thinking - Crucial for hydraulic modelling, process design, and investment planning.
  • Communication Skills - Influential verbal and written skills needed for stakeholder engagement and reporting.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration - Ability to work across Delivery, Operations, Development, and external agencies.
  • Decision-Making - Firm, consistent choices required during project reviews and technical adjudication.
  • Project Management - Juggling multiple schemes and programmes simultaneously.
  • Customer Engagement - Liaising with residents, councils, and public forums to explain plans and risks.
  • Degree: Relevant field (not strictly engineering), showing flexibility in academic background.
  • Wastewater treatment process design.
  • Civil engineering (preferable).
  • Office Software: Proficiency in Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word for data analysis and reporting.
  • Initiative & Independence: Ability to self-direct with minimal supervision.
  • Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal skills to foster trust across teams and with external bodies.
  • Public-Facing Confidence: Comfortable presenting to parish councils and engaging with residents.
What you'll receive
  • A combined pension contribution of up to 20%.
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities.
  • 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
  • The opportunity to buy up to 10 days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
  • A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
  • Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
  • A new electric car in exchange for part of your gross salary.
  • Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
  • One paid volunteering day each year.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
  • An interactive health and wellbeing platform.
