Essential Job Duties

NC State has goals to reduce campus energy use intensity by 40% from its fiscal year 2003 baseline and campus water consumption by 65% from its fiscal year 2002 baseline. Energy Management (EM), a sub-division of NC State Facilities, contributes significantly to meeting these goals by tracking, managing, and reducing energy and water waste on campus. The Energy Management Project Intern will support the Energy Management group with a variety of projects that contribute to improving the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings on campus and identifying energy and water reduction opportunities.

Essential Duties:

The Energy Management Project Intern will assist with a variety of tasks, including.

  • Energy Projects Development: The intern will develop strategies to identify projects with energy upgrade opportunities, identify the financial resources required, and calculate the projected return on investment.

  • Energy Data Analysis: The intern will gather energy-related data from sites and various internal databases (BAS, EBS and eDNA) for analysis. Using that data, the intern will support our continued development of communication, campaign, and outreach strategies for the Energy Management Programs. Example: Pull data for planning purposes.

  • Energy Management Assistant Team (EMAT) Support: The intern will collaborate with the Controls and Building Automation group to improve the Building Automation System for EMAT functionality. Tasks will include developing new trends, graphics, schematics and layouts for easy identification of energy inefficiencies.

  • Campus Communication Liaison: The intern will serve as an interface to the campus community to inform about energy and water reduction opportunities.

  • Building MEP Drawing Review: The intern will review lighting plans, plumbing prints, and HVAC drawings to identify and analyze energy inefficiencies.

  • Water Conservation: The intern will create an annual water conservation plan using EM's existing building water fixtures data. The intern will use our savings template to recommend flushometer replacements and aerator retrofits.

  • Energy Audits: The intern will participate in the campus energy audit program and any other work tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
