Summary

About the Position: Serves as the senior hydro station operator on a shift responsible for the operation of a hydroelectric powerhouse with at least 10 generating units and adjunct operating facilities which may consist of a navigation lock, fish facilities and spillway.

• Controls and coordinates the operation of the power station equipment using all levels of digital, electronic and manual devices.
• Performs and directs the performance of required operating functions; assigns operators to various stations including the control room for operating purposes and issues instructions to other project operators.
• Assures the operation of the fish facilities.
• Keeps a clear and concise log of activities on assigned shift in such a manner that operators on subsequent shifts may be informed as to all pertinent occurrences.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and annually thereafter.
• Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Chief Power Plant Operator (TC-L) without more than normal supervision. Must be able to perform common tasks of a Chief Power Plant Operator in a hydroelectric power plant of 40-megawatt generation capability or larger. Must be able to perform all tasks of a control room operator to include potential ability to take sole command of any normal or abnormal power plant operation problem and expeditiously execute the best solution such as could be exhibited in a recovery from a power blackout in the plant. Must be able to demonstrate computer skills. Work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort:

Eye and hand coordination required to operate switches and controls. Job requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking and climbing ladders and stairs. May be required to operate large valves, apply servolocks, lift deck hatches and other jobs requiring pulling or turning force. Lifts and carries equipment and supplies frequently up to, and occasionally over, 45 pounds. Work requires prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, twisting, pulling, pushing, and kneeling.

Working Conditions:

Works on a rotating shift, inside, in well-lighted, work areas. Works outdoors for short periods with exposure to climate extremes. Occasionally works in proximity to high voltages and currents. Incumbent is often exposed to equipment and machinery noises and outside the control room employee will be subject to the discomfort of wearing safety equipment such as hard-hats, ear plugs, and respirators. Must wear appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing and successfully complete and maintain all occupational health requirements.
