Location: McMurdo Station, South Pole or Palmer Station

Type: Full-Time, Contract,

Duration: Approx. 5 months

Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location

Pipefitter
o Seasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed United
States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Pipefitters
perform maintenance or construction work, or any combination thereof, under the
supervision of the Plumbing Foreman, PM Coordinator or Facilities Maintenance
Supervisor. Tasking is based on employee's prior work experience and ASC schedule
requirements.

• Position Responsibilities:
o Perform cutting and welding, pipefitting, and connections of varies types and sizes of
piping
o Perform cutting and welding of structural framing
o Perform construction related tasks in and around undeveloped and remote areas as well
as in adverse conditions
o Track material usage and update departmental inventory records
o Coordinate materials and support from other departments
o Perform tasks requiring repeated heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, digging, hauling,
standing, walking, kneeling, stooping and squatting
o Timely response to emergency service calls during and outside of normal working
hours
o Accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials
used, and processes involved
o Advise immediate Supervisor of job progress and material/labor requirements
o Accomplish tasking utilizing design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams
o Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest revisions as needed,
and create SOPs as directed
o Perform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind and
extreme cold weather
o Routinely utilize independent judgment and discretion to identify potential issues and
solve problems
o Proactively identify any unsafe conditions, hazards, or Code violations and communicate
them effectively
o Work directly with other departments to plan and complete tasking
o Learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, material, and maintenance tracking
applications
o May deploy to remote research support facilities for day trips or extended periods
(McMurdo only)
o Occasionally utilize the assistance of other station personnel to complete tasking, or
assist other trades or departments with their tasking
o Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and
Quality Assurance requirements
o Participate in Work Center Safety Program and ASC safety objectives
o Participate in community programs such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking"
(station clean-up), "GASH" (galley clean-up at Palmer), and recycling efforts
o Perform other duties as required

• Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:
o High School diploma or GED
o Minimum four years of documented experience in most phases of the pipefitting trade
o Possess 6G welding certificate
• Expected Skills and Competencies:
o Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and diagrams
o Possess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectively
utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications
o Possess the competencies, willingness and ability to perform the duties of position
• Preferred:
o Experience soldering and brazing copper piping up to 3"
o Experience in construction and/or maintenance of commercial and/or industrial
facilities
o Experience working in remote locations or extreme environments
o Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

• Physical and/or Other Requirements:
o Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
o Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for
deployment to Antarctica
o Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
o Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
o Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to
the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
o Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in
and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by
the position.
o Must participate in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-
picking" (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
o Valid Driver's License issued in the United States
o Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US
Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location
