The Manager of Power System Studies at RLC Engineering is both a top-tier technical expert and a strategic leader within the company. This position is responsible for the technical and administrative management of RLC's Power System Studies group, overseeing high-level project execution, staff development, and engineering processes to ensure RLC's work aligns with industry standards, client expectations, and corporate objectives. The Manager serves as a thought leader, providing strategic direction, supervising a team of engineers, and representing the company in both client and industry settings.

This person will participate in annual business planning sessions with the senior leadership team to assess RLC Engineering's weaknesses, strengths, threats and opportunities with the intended outcome of better understanding potential risks and opportunities, reviewing against core competencies of the group, and positioning the company to maximize potential for success.

The Incumbent will manage and maintain business systems including but not limited to reporting of time, invoicing, estimating cost of services, adhering to engineering standards, administering project controls and providing monthly status updates.

Requirements

Essential Functions of Position:
  • Supervise and mentor engineers across multiple project types, including assigning work, managing priorities, and conducting performance reviews.
  • Recruit, train, and retain highly qualified staff; implement professional development and succession planning initiatives.
  • Provide direction for large-scale projects, overseeing the development and execution of power system studies using tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, and ASPEN.
  • Ensure QA/QC for deliverables, maintain internal technical standards, and conduct peer reviews.
  • Manage group workload to meet client deadlines efficiently while ensuring high-quality results. This includes team member utilization, work schedules, and department work backlog.
  • Oversee and address project execution, including Work in Progress and Accounts Receivable.
  • Develop proposals, scope of work, and budget estimates that meet contract requirements.
  • Provide clients with status updates, milestone reports, and technical recommendations. Maintain and foster strong client relationships.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop business line strategies and project pipeline plans. Lead marketing and client relationship initiatives to expand the Power System Studies business.
  • Represent RLC at industry events, committees, and technical forums.
  • Guide the creation of engineering templates, tools, and process improvements to enhance efficiency.
  • Support the development of company-wide technical resources and training programs.
  • Manage PSS performance management process.
  • Establish PSS annual budget and manage accordingly.

Other Functions of Position:
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and resolve requests efficiently.
  • Represent RLC with professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to our mission.
  • Maintain technical proficiency through ongoing training, seminars, and professional development.
  • Willingness to travel periodically for client and project needs.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (BSEE) from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent in engineering technology.
  • 12+ years of experience in power systems engineering, with significant work in operations or planning and a focus on studies/analysis.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory or team management experience.
  • Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage strategic project execution.
  • Strong communication skills with experience in client-facing and leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in good standing.
  • Experience in department-level strategic planning and cross-office leadership.
  • Participation in technical committees, standards development, or industry organizations.
  • Background in developing engineering tools, templates, and process optimization.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to stand or sit for 8 hours and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Regular walking of grounds/property as needed.
  • Air and car travel may be required periodically.
