Global Power System Simulations Lead

General information

We are seeking a Power System Simulations expert with deep knowledge of grid code compliance and dynamic simulation of power systems, who can lead ABB's global technical efforts in this domain and represent the company in key external forums.

The candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the growth of ABB's Grid Code Compliance business by providing strong technical leadership and driving business development activities. This includes integrating R&D-developed models into engineering workflows, developing custom simulation models beyond ABB's excitation systems, and actively engaging with customers, standardization bodies, and industry events to position ABB as a trusted partner for grid code compliance solutions.

Roles & responsibilities
  • Act as the global technical authority for power system simulations with strong focus on grid code compliance, ensuring alignment and excellence across all regions.
  • Lead, mentor and guide regional teams, promoting knowledge, sharing and ensuring consistent technical excellence worldwide.
  • Drive the integration of simulation models developed by R&D into customer studies, while also leading the development of custom models beyond ABB excitation equipment (e.g., engines, converters, power plant controllers) to address customer and compliance needs.
  • Provide expert guidance on international grid code requirements, translating them into robust engineering practices and customer solutions.
  • Support complex tenders and projects worldwide by delivering technical oversight on compliance-related studies and validation.
  • Collaborate with R&D and product management to leverage digital tools, anticipate and integrate evolving grid compliance requirements into future technologies.
  • Represent ABB in international committees, standardization bodies, and industry forums, influencing grid code evolution and shaping industry practices.
  • Serve as a thought leader and speaker at global conferences and workshops, strengthening ABB's brand in grid integration and compliance.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with TSOs, utilities, regulators, and key industry stakeholders to support business growth.
  • Work closely with the Digital Sales Lead to identify and pursue new business opportunities to enhance customer engagement and sales strategies.
  • Develop and implement joint business development initiatives, integrating technical expertise with digital sales tactics to drive growth in target markets

Qualifications
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline, with a strong focus on power system dynamics, control, or simulation.
  • 10+ years of experience in power system studies, with a proven track record in grid code compliance, dynamic simulations, and model development (RMS, EMT).
  • Deep expertise in tools such as PSCAD, PSS®E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, RTDS, or equivalent, with hands-on experience modeling conventional and renewable energy sources, control systems and FACTS.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate R&D-developed models into simulation workflows and develop custom models beyond standard OEM equipment (e.g., converters, synchronous machines, power plant controllers).
  • Strong understanding of international grid codes and TSO requirements (e.g., ENTSO-E, NERC and AEMO guidelines), and ability to interpret and apply them in customer projects.
  • Experience participating in grid code compliance assessments, model validations, and certification processes with utilities, consultants, or certification bodies.
  • Proven experience in leading cross-regional technical teams, providing mentorship and standardizing simulation practices globally.
  • Established presence or active participation in industry working groups, standardization committees (e.g., IEC, IEEE, CIGRÉ), or technical conference circuits.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to represent the organization externally, both technically and strategically, in customer engagements and public forums.
  • Fluent in English; additional languages are a plus.
