You have expertise in research on software engineering, software architecture, and software quality? At the ABB Research Center Germany, you will develop advanced software technologies that empower future ABB products in automation and electrification, supporting a more sustainable world. You will collaborate at the intersection of industrial research and academia, working with partners across the globe.

• Initiate, lead, and contribute to applied research and technology transfer projects in collaboration with international ABB divisions, product development teams, customers, partners, and academic institutions.
• Continuously scout and adapt emerging technologies in software engineering and software architecture, especially related to AI for software engineering, cloud-native and edge computing architectures or embedded software systems.
• Apply your practical expertise in software engineering to industrial systems.
• Build prototypes to validate concepts and effectively communicate your work within ABB, to customers, and at scientific conferences.
• Protect intellectual property through patent applications and contribute to scientific publications.
• Actively develop your technical and interpersonal skills to advance your career.

Qualifications for the role

• Degree in computer science, software engineering, automation engineering, or a related field, complemented by either academic experience (PhD) or professional experience in industrial software engineering.
• Practical experience in software design and development (e.g., .NET, C++, Python, Java), also with the help of AI assistants or with AI-enhanced systems (SE4AI and/or AI4SE)
• Knowledge in edge and cloud technologies or embedded systems
• Proven track record in publishing research results at conferences and/or in journals.
• Beneficial: Domain knowledge in process automation
• Beneficial: Industrial automation technologies (e.g., Asset Administration Shell, OPC UA, IEC 61131-3, IEC 61499, etc.)
• Beneficial: Experience in project management
