JOB TITLE: HVAC Specialist WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt
REPORTS TO: Maintenance Supervisor PAY GRADE: M-7
DEPT./SCHOOL: Maintenance & Facilities Revised: May 24, 2023
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To maintain school district heating and cooling equipment in proper working condition and make any necessary repairs. Assists and collaborates with Maintenance Supervisor regarding Energy Management process implementation and innovation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent, must possess a valid Texas driver's license, be in good physical condition and be mechanically inclined with good general maintenance knowledge.
Must hold and maintain a current EPA Certification to handle refrigerants.
Must hold and maintain Texas Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician Registration (TDLR).
Texas Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician Certification (TDLR) preferred.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of basic construction and routine maintenance and repair procedures required.
Knowledge of Basic Electrical, Plumbing and HVAC repair procedures required.
Ability to follow verbal or written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively (electronically & verbally).
Ability to operate power tools and hand tools.
Ability to work independently.
Basic computer skills.
Experience:
Five years' experience in maintaining and repairing HVAC/R equipment preferred.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Maintains all safety and code requirements of the State, local and Board of Education guidelines.
2. Repairs and maintains all types of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment to include air- and water-cooled chillers.
3. Repairs and maintains gas fired water boilers and hot air furnaces.
4. Repairs and maintains air handlers, ventilators, cooling coils along with other mechanical heating and ventilating equipment.
5. Monitors and coordinates panels and thermostats of all systems to maintain standard working temperature.
6. Performs regular preventive maintenance and boiler water treatment programs for all heating and air conditioning equipment.
7. Installs and tests new equipment.
8. Is required to be on 24-hour call rotation.
9. Accurately orders and accounts for material and labor relation to assignments.
10. Monitors temperatures and schedules for after-hours events using building automations systems.
11. Use computer to review, fill in, and complete assigned work orders.
12. Responsible for annual department/division inventory of physical equipment and supplies.
13. Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands:
Ability to communicate (verbal, written and electronically). Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before small groups of employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Demands/Environmental Factors:
Frequent district wide travel; occasional irregular hours; strenuous walking, standing, and/or climbing; heavy lifting and carrying; work outside and inside; exposure to hot and cold temperatures; exposure to dust, toxic chemicals, and materials; slippery or uneven walking surfaces; work on ladders and aerial work platforms.
