Description

Performs semi-skilled and skilled work of average difficulty in the maintenance and operation of wastewater plants and pumping facilities. Performs related work as required.
Examples of Duties
The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competence and satisfactory performance of these duties. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  1. Monitors lift stations and plants for proper operation
  2. Checks tank levels and sludge levels
  3. Makes daily and monthly reports on water and wastewater operations & performs laboratory testing
  4. Takes samples of wastewater to City and Commercial labs.
  5. Changes chlorine cylinders
  6. Services and repairs pumps, chlorinators, blowers and other equipment
  7. Replaces valves and lines around pump stations and plants
  8. Assists lead operator in compiling and preparing monthly reports for regulatory agencies
  9. The employee refers to written guidelines which include charts, blueprints, manuals and regulations. These guidelines are available for most job-related decisions, but the employee must use some judgment to apply and interpret guidelines. The employee also refers to Federal and State regulations to adhere to construction codes. The employee must use judgment to interpret guidelines such as regulations. The employee may recommend changes to or additions to existing guidelines
  10. The employee performs tasks that require coordination of a variety of processes and methods and to make decisions concerning interpretation of data and planning work. The employee must determine what action to take even in unusual circumstances when customary work methods must be refined or changed.
  11. The employee provides initial training to new employees. Monitor the work of subordinate employees for accuracy, completeness and compliance with established procedures. Generally, the employee specifies the work to be done and the priorities involved when making work assignments.
  12. The employee discuses work assignments with the supervisor, but is usually free to decide how to do the work. The employee's work is reviewed daily to see that general trade or professional practices and standards are being followed.
  13. The employee may confer with co-workers, supervisors, the City Manager, the Mayor and members of City Council and with the City Attorney.
  14. The purpose of contact is to give and/or receive information which is non-controversial in nature. The employee also resolves problems concerning subordinates' work assignments.
  15. May assist in TCEQ/EPA inspections

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Considerable knowledge of the operation, equipment and materials used in water or wastewater plants and stations
  2. Good knowledge of the maintenance and repair of pumps and electric motors
  3. Knowledge and skill in the use of hand and power tools to repair and maintain equipment, building and grounds
  4. Knowledge and skill in the operation of a back-hoe to load sand or sludge and in the operation of a dump truck to haul sand or sludge
  5. Good knowledge of the methods and techniques needed to plan, coordinate, monitor, schedule and direct the work of subordinates involved in the construction, maintenance and operation of water/wastewater distribution.
  6. Good knowledge of the use, repair and maintenance of equipment used in wastewater treatment and collections.
  7. Good knowledge of water/wastewater main construction to plan construction of, coordination crews and maintain wastewater force mains and collection system.
  8. Good knowledge of laboratory/test procedures to analyze wastewater samples
  9. Good knowledge of Federal and State regulatory requirements related to water/wastewater treatment and testing.
  10. Knowledge and skill in performing complicated math such as simple algebra
  11. Knowledge and skill in using computers and spreadsheets

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have high school diploma/GED
  • Must have valid driver's license
  • Must have driving record sufficient for coverage by City's auto liability carrier
  • Must have a State of Texas "B" certificate required at the time of placement
