BRIEF DESCRIPTION

This is a non-supervisory position which requires technical expertise. Duties include but are not limited to maintaining water pumps, equipment, facilities and collecting samples. This position is classified as essential within the Public Works Utility Department and will adhere to all policies and procedures pertaining to an essential worker.

The Water and Wastewater Utilities provide a vital and necessary public service to the citizens of Cleburne, therefore all employees of the utilities are subject to call out in the event of an emergency situation. This can include before, during, and immediately after a natural or manmade disaster, terrorism, pandemic, and equipment or system failures. As the utilities are in continuous operation emergency call out can occur at any time of the day or night and on any day of the year and can require employees to stay on the job for extended periods of time.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Ability to attend and understand technical courses
  • Ability to assume responsibility for the complete operation of treatment plants
  • Ability to detect problems in equipment operations
  • Ability to make mathematical calculations by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing numbers using formulas commonly used in the water industry

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Graduate or GED equivalent

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A Valid Class C Texas motor vehicle driver license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.

Employees with no job-related experience or not holding a minimum of a Class C Surface Water Treatment License accepted into WORP will be making a commitment to achieve a Class C Surface Water Treatment License Certification issued by the TCEQ within twenty-four (24) months of employment, with their first attempt to pass the exam to be after twelve (12) months but before thirteen (13) months of employment.

The employee will be enrolled in the City Water Operator Recruitment Program for certification training. The employee must be prepared to test for certification within thirteen (13) months of their hire date. Employees are given a maximum of four (4) attempts within a twelve (12) month period to pass the exam. If he/she does not pass on the fourth attempt his/her employment will be terminated. Continued employment is conditional upon passing the state certification exam as outlined here. Upon completion of certification, the employee will be advanced to a Pay Group 16.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDS

Operates in both an indoor and outdoor environment. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold during summer and winter months.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Hand tools, power tools, bobcat, push mower, weed-eater, by-pass pumps, valve wrenches, 12 lb. pick hammer, various lab equipment, SCADA, computers, personal protective equipment, handheld radios, SCBA, crane hoist, various types of pumps and motors.
