Job Description
The Department of Environmental Quality is looking to fill a Nuclear Regulatory Technical Coordinator (Environmental Engineer) position in the Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on experience and the job level offered within the series.

Job Description

• Provide support in developing a nuclear program that facilitates interaction with nuclear facility personnel, the public, and other stakeholders to ensure the ongoing protection of human health and the environment.
• Identify and provide well-founded technical recommendations to resolve regulatory obstacles to nuclear fuel cycle facility licensing, while upholding essential safety and environmental benchmarks.
• Evaluate the feasibility of complex engineering plans to ensure regulatory compliance and resolve engineering challenges by identifying clear regulatory interpretations.
• Use technical expertise to support public safety communication in a variety of public settings.
• Actively solve problems in a professional, responsive, and fair manner that is supported by science and the law.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have the following:

• Advanced knowledge of nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, and radiological safety.
• Knowledge of principles, practices and administration of nuclear safety programs including systems, processes and the application of statutes, rules and standards governing such programs.
• Ability to learn and apply complex regulatory frameworks for regulation of all components of the nuclear fuel cycle.
• Ability to thoroughly assess and facilitate reduction of the potential impact of facility design and operating procedures on people and the environment.
• Knowledge of the Utah Radiation Control rules and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations and guides.
• Ability to proactively engage with and cultivate strong, mutually beneficial working relationships with the nuclear power sector, state and federal counterparts.
• Strong communication skills and ability to communicate scientific and technical information both orally and in writing to a broad range of audiences.

Preferences

• Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering. Preferably, nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering. An advanced degree in health physics, physics, chemistry, or other related fields may also be considered.

Job Series

The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Engineer I with a salary range of $25.96 - $41.19, an Environmental Engineer II with a salary range of $30.57 - $48.48 per hour, or an Environmental Engineer III with a salary range of $34.06 - $54.04 per hour.

Work Location

This position may be eligible for a hybrid of both in-office/hybrid work schedule (2 days a week required in office and any mandatory in office meetings) and remote workdays (work must be performed in Utah). Our office is located at 195 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, Utah. A position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason. Note: Under Administrative Rule R13-4 all work must be performed within the State of Utah. As such employees should either reside in Utah or be in the process of relocating to within 30 days of their start date.
