Technology and Digital transformation offer opportunities for significant growth in these sector agnostic areas (supported by the technical engineering expertise across Energy Transmission and Transmission and Distibution).
A little more about your role:
As an Offshore Cable Project / Mechanical Engineer, you will be expected to provide day-to-day expertise to the Offshore Cables Engineering team on offshore cable design including hardware design activities, making key technical decisions to support the project based on your experience. The role is client facing therefore, a strong ability to communicate effectively and accordingly is required. The role will support the Project Managers and Lead Offshore Engineer with project deliverables specific to the HVAC / HVDC Offshore Cable elements.

As an Offshore Cable Project / Mechanical Engineer, you will be expected to provide day-to-day expertise to the Offshore Cables Engineering team on offshore cable design including hardware design activities, making key technical decisions to support the project based on your experience. The role is client facing therefore, a strong ability to communicate effectively and accordingly is required. The role will support the Project Managers and Lead Offshore Engineer with project deliverables specific to the HVAC / HVDC Offshore Cable elements.
Your responsibilities would include:
- Conduct detailed design engineering for new projects, collaborating with other departments to ensure understanding of all customer/project requirements and to support the Proposals, Purchasing, Project Management, Quality and Production teams.
- This is a varied role allowing the candidate to work across a broad spectrum within the Offshore Transmission Team. The role will vary but be focused on cable engineering, hardware specifications for inter-array / export cables and project engineering support.
- The project engineering role will support the PM with progress updating of Engineering Deliverables throughout the project lifecycle, providing updates to monthly reporting both internally and externally.
- The role includes the support of junior members of the team, with training, guidance and knowledge transfer.
- Depending upon the project and requirements, the role will involve review of client specifications, vendor documentation.
- The role may require travel to client's offices or site alongside potential vendor engagement.
General Deliverables:
The Offshore Cable Project / Mechanical Engineer will be required to support the project in the creation & coordination of the following typical documents;
- Electrical & mechanical designs, calculations, specification and report writing for HVAC and HVDC cables in accordance with industry standards and best practices.
- Pull-In Calculations.
- Windfarm layout designs / drawings
- General arrangement drawings,
- Scope of Supply drawings
- Decommissioning Procedures
- Cable Accessories and Specification generation and where required review of vendor supplied documentation.
- Accessories include but not limited to: T-Connectors, Dropper Cables, CPS, Pull-in Equipment, Hang-Offs, Cable Cleats Breakaway systems, glands and temporary abandonment systems.
- Cable Protection System specification generation in support of procurement activities / vendor or client requirements.
- Understanding of Bend Restrictors, Bend Stiffeners, J-Tube Sealing, Buoyancy Modules is required.
- Installation, Operation and Maintenance procedure or guideline generation.
- Employer requirements, creation of technical documentation to support WSP's clients with their procurement process.
- Understanding of PQQ, ITT processes and an ability to advise accordingly.
- Requirement for vendor engagement and interface coordination in support of works.
- Cable Route Engineering, including layout design, burial assessments and risk assessments.
- Proposal scopes of work, coordination and delivery.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate:
- Must have an understanding of HVAC Inter Array Cable and Export cable design, specifications and requirements is necessary. Specifically, the ability to generate documentation and cable designs for 66kV - 132kV HVAC cables. This includes Cable Design Basis, Design Reports and Current Rating Calculations. Knowledge and ability to design static and dynamic cables is required. Understanding of both static and dynamic applications would be advantageous.
- The role will see the engineer supporting design works for HVDC Interconnectors up to 525kV. This includes Cable Design Basis, Design Reports and Current Rating Calculations. Knowledge and ability to design static and dynamic cables is required.
- Must have an understanding of all the key elements of cable design and manufacture, with a thorough understanding of the selection process with knowledge of the electrical cores, sheath, armour and outer layers.
- Shall be capable of performing calculations for both electrical and mechanical covering cable ratings studies, electrical characteristics through to pull-in tensions & installation. This shall support the cable design team.
- Capable of creating engineered solutions, considering all aspects of the project requirements, whilst satisfying all customer and internal requirements. With strong ability to coordinate and interface cross department internally within WSP and with external vendors and clients
- Shall be capable of providing project engineering support which shall include a focus on coordinating and managing proposal work. Working with the Head of Offshore Transmission and PM to coordinate and deliver proposal scopes, cost sheets and bring together the design teams responses within a single point contactAbility and competence to engage with clients in support of the offshore cable lead and / or project management team, therefore an ability to communicate clearly and provide information in concise reports to WSP's clients will be required.
- Experience with Autodesk software packages, specifically Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD is desirable. Experience with other cable analysis software packages would be of benefit.
