This role ensures the prevention and control of corrosion on fuel systems, storage tanks, pipelines, and associated infrastructure to maintain operational safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The specialist utilizes a variety of tools, techniques, and materials in accordance with industry standards and environmental guidelines. This position requires a strong understanding of corrosion processes, coating systems, and safety protocols specific to hazardous and flammable environments.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Performs corrosion control to include washing, cleaning, corrosion detection, corrosion removal, metal treatment, and touch-up painting.
- Use hand and power tools as required for corrosion prevention, treatment, and touch-up painting.
- Applies protective coatings to exterior POL systems, facilities, and equipment that include but are not limited to pipelines (including foam), pipeline supports, tanks (including topes and sides), railings, exposed surfaces (except buildings), and fixed fire alarm systems.
- Ensures a protective coating is applied to all pipelines and pipeline-related structures every 24 months.
- Ensures a protective coating is applied to all storage tanks every 36 months.
- Remove rust and all surface impurities that contribute to improper paint adhesion from the surfaces of pipelines and fixed fire alarm systems before applying protective coatings.
- Performs exterior application of protective coatings of steel storage tanks IAW NAVFAC TS-09873 and UFC 3-460-03 Maintenance of Petroleum Systems, American Petroleum Institute (API) guidance.
- Performs touch-up painting between painting cycles within 10 working days.
- Cleans and prepares POL pipeline surfaces to near white metal and applies protective coatings IAW NAVFAC MO-230. Lift pipeline from supports to apply protective coatings to contact areas. Use aluminum paint NSN 8010-00-857-1939 and primer NSN 8030-00-056- 9522 or equivalents as approved by the KO and reviewed by the Fuels Officer. Use TTE 490 Silicone alkyd marine finish white paint if areas to be repaired are prepared with near-white blast cleaning before reapplication of TTE 490.
- Identification, safe handling, and appropriate disposal of paints, stains, preparatory and undercoating materials, and other hazardous materials.
- Helps coordinate movement of materials and equipment to work locations and sets up work site.
- Completes and reviews records, maintains tools and equipment, and performs various clean-up activities.
- Observe and follow all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal protective equipment.
- Clean and pressure wash pipelines and skimmer ponds as needed for preservation of equipment.
- Applies paint on skimmer ponds as needed for prevention of microbiological build-up.
- Removal of excess water at secondary locations including skimmer ponds required per weather conditions.
- Performs other work-related duties and responsibilities as assigned to meet organizational/operational objectives.
Basic Qualifications
- Knowledge of corrosion protection techniques, surface preparation standards, and coating application methods.
- Must have a working knowledge of corrosion theory, conditions leading to corrosion and the procedures utilized to remove and treat corrosion.
- Must have knowledge and skill in hazardous materials handling, application, and disposal.
- Must have knowledge in Interior Tank Cleaning.
- Must have knowledge in using Sky climber.
- Must have knowledge to erect Scaffolds.
- Familiarity with industry standards such as SSPC, NACE, or ASTM.
- Physical ability to work in confined spaces, heights, and harsh environments.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents, specifications, and schematics.
- Demonstrate the ability to read, understand and follow written or oral instructions.
- Must have a working knowledge of applicable maintenance/technical manuals, basic tools, and special tools.
- Must speak, read, and understand the English Language.
- Must pass overseas medical screening and be in good health.
Preferred Qualifications
JOB SPECIFICATIONS: SPECIAL CERTIFICATION OR TRAINING
- Additional technical training or certifications in Industrial Painting or Corrosion Control are highly recommended.
EDUCATION:
- Must be at least a high school, technical, or vocational course graduate.
EXPERIENCE:
- Must have at least 2 years of experience in Corrosion Control and Pipeline painting.
