Do you have the ambition, enthusiasm and technical capability to work with us as an associate groundwater modeller within the water resources sector? We are looking for someone to join our successful Water Management Consultancy groundwater resources team in supervising and delivering a growing portfolio of projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced candidate looking to progress their career in a vitally important industry with an internationally renowned company. AtkinsRéalis is one of the world's most respected design, engineering and project management consultancies, with over 35,000 employees worldwide. At AtkinsRéalis, we offer more than just a job. We offer an opportunity to make a difference and shape the world to benefit future generations and the natural environment.

As part of our Environment practice, our highly respected Water Management Consultancy business operates at the interface between people and the water environment, tackling problems relating to water availability, water quality, water habitat and future changes to these. We offer our clients a team of passionate, intelligent, digitally-minded, capable, and innovative staff with a unique blend of diverse technical skills. We enjoy working collaboratively and innovatively, delivering projects that bring about real change and that make a positive difference to the environment and society. This provides great career development opportunity for our staff.

Our groundwater team works at the forefront of managing the challenges of providing resilient and environmentally sustainable water supplies for the future while ensuring water habitats are protected from new infrastructure development. We are undertaking an increasing number and range of important and exciting projects that involve groundwater resource evaluation, development and management and environmental impact investigation for water companies, other major water users and regulators. Building on this success, we are growing our friendly and approachable team and this growth could include you. You could help us to win and deliver work across our extensive client portfolio and enhance our already strong reputation for excellence.

Your purpose:
  • Win, deliver and manage our portfolio of groundwater modelling projects working with our hydrogeologist technical leads and other technical disciplines.
  • Develop trusted client relationships.
  • Champion high standards of performance.
  • Undertake work to a high standard, ensuring accuracy and quality.
  • Undertake and delegate complex problem solving which may include data gathering and processing, calculations and modelling, conceptualisation, reporting, proposal writing and costing.
  • Contribute to development of new and innovative approaches and digital tools.
  • Develop new areas of business for the team.
  • Work closely with the rest of the groundwater resources team to mentor and support more junior staff, including providing training on aspects of modelling. Collaborative and supportive teamwork is vital to our success.
  • Work broadly across other hydrogeological assessments and water resources modelling applications alongside the focus on groundwater modelling.
  • Work collaboratively with other technical disciplines in the Water Management Consultancy team and beyond, delivering a range of projects relating to water supply, strategic planning, resource optimisation and environmental assessment.

What you can bring:
  • A degree in science, engineering or mathematics, a post-graduate qualification in hydrogeology or a related subject and ideally chartership through a relevant professional body.
  • Comprehensive knowledge in, and demonstrable experience of all aspects of groundwater modelling for water resources, including building, developing and updating conceptual and numerical models at a regional scale and model use in assessment of abstraction impacts on the environment for water companies and regulators.
  • Ideally, experience of developing or using UK regional groundwater models.
  • Wider experience including water resources hydrogeology and hydrology, for example Water Industry National Environment Programme investigations (low flow, Water Framework Directive No Deterioration or Environmental Destination, catchment water quality), signal and pumping tests, borehole design, groundwater flooding or water resource planning.
  • Good understanding of UK hydrogeology and of the operational and environmental regulatory framework of UK water management.
  • Experience of leading projects through the project life-cycle of problem definition, data collection, analysis, interpretation and drawing succinct conclusions and recommendations.
  • Excellent numerical, analytical, report-writing and presentational skills and an eye for detail.
  • Enthusiasm and motivation to solve challenging water resources problems within a high achieving team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels to support collaborative working and the building of high-quality client relationships.
  • Expertise using MODFLOW (ideally including MODFLOW6) and other groundwater flow models, as well as recharge models such as 4R or SWAc.
  • Coding skills in Python, R, Fortran, VBA or similar, are desirable, as are skills in GIS. An interest in continuing to develop your skills and keep abreast of new and emerging technologies.
