bp's communications and external affairs (C&EA) team is responsible for delivering the external affairs and advocacy agenda; playing an integral role to ensure sustainable business relations are maintained. Through policy shaping, advocacy, engagement, communications and brand building we help strengthen bp's reputation and support our global businesses.
bp America's Head of International Affairs leads the navigation of US foreign policy risks and opportunities for bp. Offering fantastic exposure to almost every business at bp, this position represents the company's interests externally; owning both internal and external critical relationships and ensuring alignment with the company's strategic objectives in Washington DC. The role will be responsible for providing counsel to bp's global businesses which are exposed to US foreign policy risk and/or opportunity, managing risk and developing coordinated solutions. It also requires research and analysis of US policy trends and decisions, as well as a deep substantive understanding of foreign governments and complex geopolitical issues. This role requires the candidate to be a representative and ambassador for the company, with the ability to brief and interact with senior government officials from around the world. It requires critical thinking with a deep understanding of global markets, international affairs and US foreign policy. The ideal candidate will have a background in international affairs and in policy and advocacy, with a demonstrable understanding of policy issues in energy and extractive sectors.

How much do we pay (Base)? ($200,000 - $300,000)
*Note that the pay range listed for this position is a genuinely expected and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting.
This position offers paid vacation depending on your years of relevant industry experience and will range from 120 - 240 hours of vacation per year for full times employees (60 - 240 hours of vacation per year for part time employees). You will also be eligible for 9 paid holidays per year and 2 personal choice holidays. What you will do...
- Analyze bp's risk and opportunity, as related to bp's global operations and US foreign policy.
- Develop and execute bp's international government engagement strategies in coordination with senior management to advance business objectives in Washington, DC.
- Represent the company at international conferences, meetings, and events and build strong relationships with international partners, including government agencies, NGOs, and trade associations.
- Effectively communicate bp's advocacy priorities externally.
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure alignment with the company's strategic, business objectives.
- Coordinate closely with bp's Intelligence & International Advisory function to support a holistic geopolitical risk management and advocacy offer to the company.
- Monitor and analyze international foreign policy, national security and trade policy developments and provide advice to bp business leaders
- Work closely with US Federal Government Affairs team, aligning on advocacy efforts.
- Manage a small DC based high performing team and oversee IA budget
What you will bring...
- A Bachelor's degree in International Relations, Political Science, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
- 15+ years work experience in international affairs, policy or communications and advocacy
- Strong understanding of US foreign policy, international relations and bp's global businesses
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to write and present complex ideas in an easy-to-understand way.
- An ability to lead complex projects and work optimally with cross-functional teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working in a multinational corporation and in or with government agencies. Prior federal government service is strongly preferred.
