What's the role

Shell Pipeline is currently seeking to fill an Instrument & Electrical (I&E) Technician vacancy for Fourchon Terminal working a 4/10 schedule. This position requires the successful candidate to live within 1 hour and 30 minutes from Fourchon La.

The candidate must perform day-to-day operational and maintenance activities to ensure safe and reliable operations that meet regulatory and company requirements for the transportation of crude oil and natural gas to the market. Successful candidate must have willingness to become multiskilled across other Disciplines: I&E, Measurement, Ops, Mechanical, and ROW.

This position is part of a team supporting the pipelines, stations, and other pipeline facilities within the assigned geographical area. The role requires flexibility across various disciplines, including Instrumentation and Electrical (I&E), measurement, operations, mechanical, and right-of-way (ROW). Responsibilities include managing the electrical operational activities of platform utility systems, such as medium and high voltage distribution systems, air compressors, generators, sump systems as well as some mechanical and measurement activities. Additionally, the role may involve backfilling for electrical technicians at other SPLC-operated locations and participating in future on-call rotations. This selected candidate must ensure that all electrical and instrumentation equipment is maintained according to scheduled maintenance plans in a timely manner. Although this position does not have direct reports, it requires collaboration with other personnel and customers to successfully complete tasks and responsibilities

What you'll be doing

  • Schedule, execute, and document regulatory inspections, preventive maintenance, and reactive/breakdown maintenance on a wide range of instrumentation and electrical equipment in accordance with the SPLC Electrical Inspection & Maintenance manual and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Install, inspect, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair instruments and electrical equipment at sites that may include offshore platforms, pipeline pump stations, tank farms, terminals, dock facilities, and/or delivery sites. Specific equipment will vary with assets at the locations covered; examples include motors, motor operated valves, control valves, dead weight testers, electrical systems, 13.8kV AC switchgear down to 24 Volt DC instrumentation, PLC, communication equipment, motor controls, SCADA equipment, sampling equipment, fire and gas detection systems, generators, transformers, etc.
  • Interpret and understand equipment, station, and protective and control devices (P&CD) drawings; use knowledge to serve as expert on the equipment parameters, flow rates, pressure ratings, etc.
  • Assess other customers' needs daily to ensure all instrumentation and equipment is safe and reliable for operation and maintained, per approved R&I plans and that appropriate resources are available to meet customer needs.
  • The ability to communicate well at all levels in the organization, manage external relationships with contractors and customers, and strong process discipline.
  • Perform all work in a safe manner in adherence with Goal Zero.
  • Follow the AMS maintenance execution process (ME). Use SAP Preventative Maintenance (PM) notifications and work orders to manage work processes to ensure all instrumentation and electrical equipment is maintained per scheduled maintenance plans in a timely manner.
  • Follow Process Control Domain (PCD) processes.
  • Manage work orders in SAP to meet maintenance requirements and reactive maintenance requests.
  • Own and organize assigned jobs through determining material and equipment needed, scheduling downtime, and arranging for outside contractors and special items needed.
  • Oversee third parties to ensure safe operations and adherence to regulations and manufacturer specifications.
  • Respond to abnormal operation conditions.
  • Work closely with technical support staff, engineering staff, operations staff, and other stakeholders to maintain system reliability and availability.
  • Complete and stay in compliance with required Federal, State, and Local regulations; Operator Qualification; HSSE training and standards; and other required applicable regulations (e.g. Hazmat, RCRA, etc.).
  • Actively support and participate in the LEAN processes, audits, inspections, and other company sponsored initiatives
  • Monitor equipment performance trends to identify potential reliability and/or equipment issues that could impact Operations; develop recommendations to address. Follow practices and procedures to support continuous improvement of maintenance programs and tasks.
  • Support Management of Change (MOC) process and procedures.
  • This position is also an active member of the facilities Incident Command Structure and response team.


Special challenges:

  • This position covers a large area and wide range of equipment in Shell Midstream.
  • This position is held in a remote location with limited support staff.
  • This position requires up front planning to execute tasks timely and safely.
  • An individual is expected to meet proficiency in Instrument, Electrical, and Measurement within a reasonable period of time which can vary based on previous experience. Once proficient, they will be expected to develop secondary skills in order to provide relief to other Maintenance team members and support their own continuous development.
  • Individuals should be able to demonstrate and take the initiative to further develop I&E along with measurement skills.
  • Daily activities may include lifting 50lbs, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting, standing, walking on uneven ground, climbing multiple flights of stairs on a regular basis multiple times per day, twisting, pulling, and pushing. In addition, there could be work in confined spaces and potentially at heights above 6 feet.
  • Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods of time in an unfavorable environment - High winds, Extreme Heat & Cold Weather conditions.
  • Be available / on-call for reactive work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response when required.
  • Live within a reasonable response time from the primary location(s).


What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis
  • 2 or more years of work experience, require high school diploma or equivalent; strongly prefer a technical degree.
  • A highly motivated individual who can independently recognize and mitigate hazards, has the discipline to work and drive safely every day, is ready to be a proactive, team player within a small work group with a strong safety culture, and committed to continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrating safe work practices and compliance in a hazardous work environment.
  • Individual must be a licensed driver, able to obtain/hold a valid TWIC card, and maintain qualification to enter customer facilities. Must be able to pass a driver's license background certification from fleet services and maintain driving privileges if assigned a company vehicle.
  • This position will require some travel to cover work in other areas as needed. Defensive Driving class will be required.
  • Must be able to obtain a HAZWOPER/OPA First Responder Certificate.
  • Must be able to pass all electrical, regulatory, and Shell training as required for the role, which could include NFPA70E, NEC, and OSHA1910.269.
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills required to work well and influence others.
  • Adept at managing important internal and external relationships, including key contacts with the Houston Control Center, external customers, and regulators.
  • Part of the local Emergency Response team and required to live within a reasonable response time from the primary work location(s).
  • Experience in the execution of preventive and reactive maintenance in the Electrical and/or Instrumentation discipline.
  • Experience in troubleshooting electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Experience in failure analysis and equipment reliability.
  • Experience in obtaining and issuing Permits to Work inclusive of gas monitoring requirements, identification, and application of Lock Out / Tag Out.
  • Experience performing and completing Job Hazard Analysis
  • Proficient in planning, coordinating, and executing work plans and preventative and reactive maintenance programs.
  • Experience working in an environment which requires multi-tasking and the continuous re-prioritization of work tasks due to the demand for keeping systems safe and operational.
  • Monitor own development needs and work with Supervisor to address improvements and training.
  • Prior liquid or gas measurement experience, and/or electrical/instrumentation systems installation and maintenance experience.
  • Strong preference for individuals with experience programming and troubleshooting a Honeywell DCS system.
  • Proficient at working on a computer, using standard operating programs, and entering information into systems.
  • Experience with SAP, Excel, PowerPoint, and navigating SharePoint.
  • Knowledge of OSHA Electrical Safe Work Practices.
  • Experience in procurement and work scheduling.


What we offer

The base salary range for this position is $84, 000 - $126, 000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.

Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives.
