Job Description:
The Legal Counsel is a key member of the Brazil C&P Legal Team, supporting the Production and Operations business by providing day-to-day legal advice on upstream matters, especially in Brazil. Responsibilities include advising on bid round qualifications, pre- and post-tender negotiations, agreements, regulatory analysis, JV management, and drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial contracts. The role requires adapting to regulatory changes, ensuring consistency with BP US/UK legal standards, managing multiple complex projects, and representing the business in industry associations and government bodies. Candidates must hold a law degree from a top-tier Brazilian university with active OAB, possess upstream experience from specialized law firms or oil & gas companies, and demonstrate fluency in English, with expertise in oil & gas contracts, strategic legal risk management, and stakeholder influence in matrix organizations.
Key Results / Accountabilities
- Responsible for providing day to day legal advice on legal matters involving Upstream businesses in the region, especially in Brazil.
- Provide legal advice and support the business in bid round qualification, supporting pre- and post-tender negotiations, agreements and regulatory analysis.
- Legal support to the business in Joint Venture management.
- Drafting, reviewing and supporting the negotiation of commercial contracts such as services, distributor, product supply, logistics, sales and power agreements.
- Represent the business supported in class association and government bodies when needed.
Key challenges faced on the role
Adapt to changes.
Follow up on recent changes in the regulation.
Ensure consistency between Brazil and BP US/UK legal requirements.
Prioritize resources and manage workload between the ongoing matters/projects.
Deal with multiple complex matters at same time.
Comfortable supporting within operational tasks as needed
Experience and Expertise
Law Degree from a top tier Brazilian university with active OAB.
5+ years of proven senior experience
Upstream experience with expertise in managing profit-sharing agreements during both the development and production phases.
English (fluent)
Spanish (will be considered a PLUS)
Experience in top tier law firm or oil & gas company (operator and non-operator)
Country / Cluster
South America (except for Argentina)

Stakeholder Influence in Matrix Organizations: Strong communication and negotiation skills to navigate cross-functional teams, global reporting lines, and diverse cultural contexts.
Expertise in Oil & Gas Contracts and Regulatory Frameworks: Deep understanding of Brazilian upstream agreements (e.g., profit-sharing, joint ventures), local energy regulations, related areas such as environmental, compliance and labor.
Agility and Resilience Under Pressure: Capacity to manage high workloads, shifting priorities, and urgent matters with composure and adaptability.
Cost-Conscious Delivery Excellence: Demonstrated ability to drive legal outcomes that balance cost-efficiency with high-quality execution demonstrating smart resourcing, process optimization, and strategic prioritization to meet business needs without compromising standards.
