This Position reports to:
Design Manager

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Principal Engineer to join our team at ABB Oy, Drives unit in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki.

In this role, you will be the technical owner of electrical & electronics design of ABB Industrial drive portfolio which is currently in production. You will be performing design and maintenance activities and projects of varying size and complexity, and completing tasks cost-effectively and in accordance with quality standards and safety requirements.

You will perform a variety of engineering and product life cycle management assignments and projects under the direction of the product engineering manager . You will be responsible for the execution of electrical engineering tasks to develop, maintain, and improve designs under responsibility of the global product engineering team. Each day, you will manage advanced engineering/design w o r k, advanced c o m pu t a tion s , an a l y sis, a nd electronics d e s i gn task s . Proactively seeking and implementing initiatives to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction is an essential part of your role.

You will get to collaborate with electronics manufacturing service providers, our production, product development, and sales units globally and locally.

You'll be part of a knowledgeable and collaborative team whose core competence is power electronics.

Your responsibilities

• Owner of several circuit designs, power electronics designs, and PCBAs used in ABB Industrial drive products
• Active identification and implementation of improvement & cost reduction opportunities. Analyze and perform corrective actions for production and field issues
• Performing comprehensive testing to validate designs, qualify new components and verify agency compliance
• Document changes utilizing ECN process and coordinate design changes to global manufacturing network together with other product engineering teams located in different parts of the world
• Participating in problem solving activities to resolve customer and production issues
• Maintaining schematic and PCB design files, bills of materials, approved vendor lists, and manufacturing files for product responsible designs
• Supporting our EMS suppliers

Your background

• Master of Science or higher degree in electrical or electronics engineering with 8+ years' experience with circuit and PCB design in a manufacturing environment is essential. Experience with inverters or similar power conversion equipment
• You are proficient with schematic capture and PCB layout software. Experience with PADS logic and layout highly desirable.
• Proven experience with one or more of the following: Design of IGBT gate drivers with fault protection and thyristor control circuits / Design of switch mode power supplies especially related to buck and flyback topologies / Knowledge of power electronics & control related to AC motor drives / Experience with microcontroller system design and analog circuits / Knowledge of multilayer PCB design and good layout principles
• You are highly skilled in using advanced test equipment including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and environmental chambers. Knowledge of testing at voltages from 230-690V and a strong motivation to put safety first are essential
• Familiarity with agency requirements such as IEC, UL, CSA, CE, etc. is essential
• Strong written and verbal communication skills are relevant. You are fluent in English, both written and spoken. Finnish skills are a plus
• You are energetic and comfortable with self-directing assigned activities and have strong initiative to complete projects. You enjoy working both independently and in team
• Readiness to travel internationally for up to 30 days annually
