Job Description

Overview

We are seeking a Tolls Project Director to join our team in Edison, NJ.

In this role, you will lead complex and highly specialized toll technology projects that often involve significant agency collaboration and advanced technical requirements. Typical initiatives may include roadside toll system implementations, major back-office development or conversion efforts, toll system procurement support, and financial analysis.

You will provide strategic leadership, direction, and technical guidance to senior project managers and project managers, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services and achievement of operational performance targets. Additionally, you will mentor project leaders working on sophisticated and unconventional projects.

Projects of this scale typically generate annual net revenues between $2.5 million and $5 million and require deep technical expertise and strong leadership skills.

Your role

Leadership & Staff Development
  • Identify staffing needs and approve recruitment, transfers, and personnel actions in alignment with company guidelines.
  • Review and approve salary recommendations and position adjustments for project staff.
  • Conduct performance reviews and career planning sessions; provide ongoing feedback to support growth and development.
  • Promote technical and professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.

Project Management & Delivery
  • Oversee development of work plans, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Monitor financial performance and enforce quality control standards throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify and resolve potential issues to prevent financial loss and ensure client satisfaction.
  • Facilitate resource sharing and negotiate outsourcing budgets with technical managers.

Client Relations & Business Development
  • Develop and implement strategic marketing plans for targeted projects.
  • Maintain strong client relationships and actively pursue new business opportunities.
  • Represent the firm at industry events and encourage staff participation.
  • Maintain professional visibility through publications and presentations at conferences.

Contracts & Financial Oversight
  • Negotiate contracts with clients and subconsultants.
  • Develop operational budgets and monitor monthly performance to ensure profitability.
  • Manage accounts receivable and approve financial actions per authorization guidelines.


About you

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required; graduate degree preferred.
  • Management coursework or MBA is a plus.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 12 years of professional experience following a B.S. degree, or 11 years following an M.S. degree.
  • At least 3 years in a Senior Project Manager role managing highly complex projects.

Certifications:
  • Professional registration in the applicable field (e.g., P.E., AICP, R.A., R.L.A.) required where available.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Construction Manager (CCM) certification may be required within one year of hire.

Skills & Expertise:
  • Exceptional technical knowledge and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership, team management, and financial management capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and persuasive ability.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under pressure and deliver results.
  • Recognized expertise in a specialized discipline, delivery method, or technical process at a regional or national level.
  • Proficiency in personal computer applications and project management tools.

Additional information

Expected compensation range is between $170,000 - $240,000 annually depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
