We are looking for a Stevedoring Supervisor to join one of our projects in Mozambique.

Stevedoring Supervisor

Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Stevedoring Supervisor to lead and manage all aspects of cargo handling and movement at the port / MOF terminal. The primary responsibility is to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective loading, unloading, and securing of cargo to and from vessels, trucks, and railcars, strictly adhering to safety standards, operational plans, and schedule requirements.

Reporting to Marine department and Logistics department.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operational Leadership and Execution
  • Supervision: Directly supervise and coordinate the activities of stevedore crews, equipment operators, and labor during vessel operations (loading/discharging) and yard operations.
  • Safety Enforcement: Enforce strict adherence to all local, national, and company safety regulations, procedures, and training requirements. Conduct frequent safety briefings (Toolbox Talks) and monitor work practices to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Resource Management: Assign tasks, allocate necessary equipment (e.g., cranes, forklifts, reach stackers), and manage manpower to meet operational timelines and productivity goals.
  • Planning: Study of the stowage plan, cargo overall and yard plan provided by the operations department or Cargo Superintendent, to define the best practices for operations and ensure the correct and stable placement of cargo.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve operational bottlenecks, equipment malfunctions, labor issues, and minor discrepancies quickly and effectively to maintain workflow.

2. Quality Control and Documentation
  • Cargo Inspection: Oversee the proper handling and securing of all cargo types (e.g., containers, breakbulk, bulk, project cargo). Inspect cargo for damages and discrepancies before, during, and after handling.
  • Documentation: Ensure accurate tallying and recording of cargo movements. Verify and sign off on tally sheets, shift reports, and equipment inspection logs.
  • Communication: Maintain continuous communication with the vessel's officers, terminal control, and the operations manager regarding progress, delays, and critical issues.
  • Equipment Checks: Ensure all lifting gear, slings, and handling equipment are properly inspected, certified, and safe for use prior to the start of each shift.

3. Team Management and Administration
  • Training: Provide on-the-job training and coaching to stevedore labor to ensure competency in safe operating procedures and efficient cargo handling techniques.
  • Discipline: Administer company policies and procedures fairly, including addressing performance issues and implementing disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Reporting: Generate comprehensive shift reports detailing productivity metrics, equipment utilization, labor hours, incidents, and any operational challenges encountered.

Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in port operations, terminal logistics, or stevedoring, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Knowledge: Strong practical knowledge of vessel loading/discharging procedures, cargo securing methods (lashing), terminal safety protocols, and port equipment operations (cranes, RTGs, forklifts, etc.).
  • Certification: Relevant certifications in safety (e.g., OSHA, First Aid) and specific equipment operation (a plus).
  • Skills:
    • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and manage a diverse workforce in a fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective liaison with crews, management, and vessel personnel.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills to meet tight operational deadlines.
    • Ability to read and interpret complex stowage and cargo plans.
  • Work Environment: Must be able to work extended hours, rotating shifts (day/night), weekends, and holidays in an outdoor, all-weather, industrial environment.
