Roles of an Operations Manager
- Leader & Decision-Maker - Oversees field operations, manages teams, and makes key operational decisions.
- Strategic Planner - Develops production strategies to maximize output and reduce downtime.
- Safety Guardian - Ensures compliance with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards.
- Resource Allocator - Manages manpower, equipment, and budget to optimize productivity.
- Liaison - Acts as a bridge between field operations, corporate management, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
- Problem-Solver - Quickly addresses operational disruptions, equipment failures, or emergency situations.
Responsibilities of an Operations Manager
Operational Management.
- Plan, organize, control and oversees production strategy execution..
- Ensure stable production looking to meet set production targets.
- Minimize downtime and optimize use of facilities, plants, wells, and equipment.
- Review and assess production requirements for production strategies and any planned outages or TARs.
- Manage emergent production outages to ensure most efficient resolution and restarts.
- Monitor KPIs such as production rates, efficiency, and operating costs.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Enforce strict adherence to HSE standards and regulations.
- Lead safety audits, incident investigations, and risk assessments.
- Develop and implement emergency response plans.
- Promote a safety-first culture among staff and contractors.
- Conduct and participate in site walkdowns with team and representatives.
- Ensure Emergency Response plans exercises are conducted in line with requirements liaising with HSE and ERT teams.
- Focal Operational emergency communications with site management.
People & Team Management
- Manage, supervise, motivate field staff and contractors.
- Plan and manage manpower availability and work rotation requirements.
- Manage disciplinary issues, conflicts, and performance reviews.
- Promote skill development and succession planning in line with localization targets.
Financial & Resource Control
- Prepare and manage operational budgets.
- Monitor operating costs and implement cost-control measures.
- Ensure efficient procurement and inventory management.
- Approve expenditures within set limits.
Regulatory & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with local and international oil & gas industry regulations.
- Maintain all necessary permits, licenses, and certifications.
- Liaise with government bodies, partners, and community stakeholders.
Technical & Maintenance Oversight
- Coordinate with Maintenance dept for preventive and corrective maintenance of field equipment.
- Facilitate process for technical modifications and upgrades.
- Support / liaise with engineering to solve operational challenges and requirements impacting production.
- Ensure integrity of pipelines, wells, and storage facilities.
Reporting & Communication
- Provide regular operational reports to senior management and stake holders.
- Analyse production data and suggest improvements.
- Communicate field performance, risks, and challenges.
Continuous Improvement
- Drive innovation in field processes and technologies.
- Lead initiatives for energy efficiency and cost reduction.
Soft Skills
- Outstanding leadership qualities with the ability to inspire and manage cross-functional teams.
