EHS Team Lead - Gearbox Manufacturing & Testing (Pune, India)
Location: Pune, India
Employment Type: Full-Time
Company Overview A global leader in renewable energy technology is significantly expanding its manufacturing footprint across India, including the launch of two new advanced production facilities in 2026. The India operations, based in Pune, serve as a core regional hub for drivetrain and gearbox production supporting multi-MW wind turbine technologies.
The site operates within a high-complexity environment featuring heavy engineering, precision assembly, high-torque machinery, large-scale lifting operations, and advanced testing infrastructure. As part of ongoing regional growth, the organisation is ramping up productivity, strengthening safety systems, and building a high-performance workforce to support its rapidly expanding drivetrain business.Position Summary
The organisation is seeking an EHS Team Lead to oversee Environment, Health & Safety across its growing gearbox assembly, tooling, and testing operations in Pune. This role will be pivotal in establishing, strengthening, and standardising safety systems during a major operational expansion.
The successful candidate will drive statutory compliance, lead plant-wide risk reduction initiatives, and embed a proactive, high-performance safety culture across one of the company's most technically specialised and strategically important manufacturing lines.
Key Responsibilities
EHS Leadership & Compliance

• Ensure full compliance with Indian statutory requirements and global EHS standards (ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
• Conduct risk assessments, PTW reviews, incident investigations and implement corrective/preventive actions.
• Deliver structured safety training across LOTO, heavy lifting, rotating machinery, ergonomics, emergency response, and contractor safety.
• Support ramp-up activities, ensuring safety systems and risk controls are embedded early in new production lines.
Gearbox Assembly Safety Oversight
• Oversee EHS practices across gearbox assembly involving large castings, precision mechanical components, shaft systems, and rotating assemblies.
• Develop SOPs and enforce controls across torqueing, bearing installation, lubrication systems, alignment, lifting and rigging operations.
• Drive safety improvements aligned to productivity and throughput targets as the plant scales.
Tooling Safety & Design Assurance
• Collaborate with tooling, maintenance, and engineering teams to ensure jigs, fixtures, lifting devices, and custom tooling meet safety and ergonomic standards.
• Conduct ergonomic assessments and implement engineering-based improvements.
• Manage inspection, certification, preventive maintenance, and safe-use protocols for tooling and lifting equipment.
Testing Operations Oversight
• Lead EHS oversight in gearbox testing facilities covering load / no-load tests, high-speed rotation, vibration analysis, lubrication tests, and endurance trials.
• Ensure guards, interlocks, E-stop systems, and monitoring controls are robust and compliant.
• Analyse test anomalies and support root-cause reviews to prevent recurrence.
Process Improvement & Expansion Support
• Identify operational risks and drive improvements using engineering controls and lean/Six Sigma principles.
• Review EHS implications of localisation initiatives, equipment upgrades, layout changes, and new plant commissioning.
• Partner with Operations and Industrial Engineering to embed safety into productivity and process optimisation plans.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Work closely with Production, Quality, Industrial Engineering, Tooling, and Maintenance teams.
• Align with global drivetrain and EHS teams across multiple regions to ensure consistent standards.
• Prepare structured reporting on safety KPIs, audit findings, project status and improvement roadmaps.
Qualifications & Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Industrial Safety or related field.
• Minimum 15 years of EHS experience in heavy engineering, drivetrain, gearbox, automotive, wind turbine, or large-scale assembly environments.
• Strong understanding of Indian EHS regulations and international standards (ISO 45001 / ISO 14001).
• Experience with rotating machinery, heavy lifting operations, and precision assembly environments.
• NEBOSH / IOSH certification preferred.
• Demonstrated experience developing and implementing EHS policies, systems and procedures.
• Strong stakeholder management skills and comfort working within a dynamic, matrixed organisation.
• Proven leadership capability with experience coaching, motivating and building high-performance EHS teams.
