Job Description:

Are you an experienced and highly skilled Senior Counsel that can manage and provide expert legal advice on complex toxic tort and environmental damages portfolios? We are looking for an individual to provide strategic oversight, litigation management, and develop effective legal solutions to protect BP's interests.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal counsel and strategic guidance on a wide range of toxic tort and environmental damage claims and litigation.
  • Manage a portfolio of complex legal cases, including developing litigation strategies, overseeing outside counsel, and negotiating settlements.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues across various business units to assess legal risks, develop mitigation strategies, and ensure compliance.
  • Apply strong commercial skill to evaluate the financial implications of legal matters and contribute to sound business decisions.
  • Lead and mentor junior legal professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
  • Communicate complex legal concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, both internally and externally.
  • Proactively identify and assess emerging legal trends and regulatory changes impacting toxic tort and environmental liabilities.
  • Engage with and manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, experts, and industry groups.
  • Contribute to resource and budget planning for legal matters within the toxic tort/environmental damages portfolios.
  • Drive continuous improvement through creative and innovative approaches to legal problem-solving and risk management.
  • Resolve conflicts effectively and professionally, both internally and with external parties.

Essential skills and qualifications

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) practicing law, with a significant focus on toxic tort, environmental law, and complex litigation.

Demonstrated intuition for business and commercial competence in understanding and addressing the commercial implications of legal decisions.

Proven ability in coaching and mentoring legal professionals.

Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, both written and verbal.

Expert negotiator with a strong track record in Conflict Management and resolution.

A history of applying creativity and innovation to legal challenges.

Excellent decision making capabilities under pressure.

Demonstrated ability to influence outcomes and stakeholders effectively.

Experience with Resource and budget planning for legal matters.

Desirable skills:

Familiarity with organizational knowledge of large corporate structures is a plus.
