- JOB PURPOSE
The Project Manager (SMPP) is responsible for the overall leadership, execution, and successful delivery of the Structural Steel, Mechanical, Platework and Piping (SMPP) construction works for our client. This role provides strategic and operational direction across engineering, fabrication, welding, pre-assembly, logistics, site installation, commissioning interfaces, HSE, cost control, contract administration and stakeholder engagement.
The Project Manager ensures the project is delivered safely, on time, within budget, to quality specifications, and in accordance with THE and client requirements.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Project Leadership & Planning
- Lead full project lifecycle planning, including scope definition, project execution plans, SMPP methodology, construction sequencing, and resource planning.
- Develop and maintain master schedules using Primavera P6 or MS Project.
- Identify project constraints, risks, and mitigation strategies.
- Oversee interface management between engineering, procurement, fabrication workshops, logistics, and site execution teams.
- Construction Management (SMPP)
- Manage all SMPP construction activities including structural steel erection, mechanical installations, platework assembly, piping fabrication and installation, equipment installation, rigging operations, and welding compliance.
- Review and interpret engineering drawings, IFC packages, isometrics, GA drawings and fabrication deliverables.
- Ensure QA/QC inspection test plans, welding procedures (WPS), NDT requirements and material traceability are adhered to.
- Oversee readiness for pre-commissioning and commissioning handover packages.
- Commercial, Cost & Contract Management
- Manage project budgets, forecasting, cost tracking and financial reporting.
- Administer NEC/FIDIC or client contractual requirements, including variations, claims, change management and contractual correspondence.
- Ensure subcontractor performance is effectively managed through scope alignment and evaluation.
- HSE Leadership
- Champion a zero-harm safety culture across all work fronts.
- Ensure compliance with THE HSE management system, client safety standards, risk assessments, PTW systems and safe work procedures.
- Oversee incident investigations, corrective actions and behavioural safety programs.
- Stakeholder & Client Management
- Serve as the primary THE representative to the client.
- Facilitate weekly and monthly progress meetings, technical clarifications, and coordination workshops.
- Manage interfaces with OEMs, EPCM engineers, client representatives, regulatory bodies and community relations structures.
- Team Leadership & Workforce Management
- Lead multidisciplinary teams including construction managers, supervisors, planners, QS/contracts officers, HSE, QA/QC, and administrative staff.
- Ensure expat and local workforce integration, skills transfer and productivity optimisation.
- Monitor labour performance, crew composition, and resource efficiencies.
- Reporting & Documentation
- Provide detailed progress reports, dashboards, cost status updates, schedule look-ahead, risk registers and change logs.
- Prepare handover dossiers, MDR documentation, commissioning readiness documents and project close-out reports.
- QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management or related field (highly experienced candidates without formal degrees may be considered).
- Minimum 15–20 years’ experience managing SMPP projects in mining, smelting, heavy industrial or EPCM environments.
- Strong experience with large-scale mining construction projects (mills, crushers, conveyors, tanks, shafts, plants, etc.).
- Proficiency in Primavera P6, MS Project, MS Office and construction management software.
- Strong familiarity with QA/QC systems, welding procedures, WPS/PQR, NDT processes, ISO standards, HSE systems and project controls.
- Experience managing mega-project teams and multicultural workforces in remote locations.
- Demonstrated ability in contract administration (NEC/FIDIC), commercial management and risk control.
- Proven capability to deliver projects in challenging environments.

- Zero Lost Time Injuries (LTI).
- 100% compliance with HSE procedures and audits.
- Daily/Weekly toolbox talks conducted.
Commercial KPIs
- Timely submission of claims, variations and contractual notices (100% within deadlines).
- Forecast accuracy for cost and schedule (±5% variance).
- Subcontractor compliance to scope and performance requirements.
Stakeholder/Client Satisfaction KPIs
- Positive client feedback (minimum satisfaction score 85%).
