The Systems Architect is responsible for developing and maintaining the high-level architecture of systems to be implemented. This includes establishing the basic structure of the system, defining architectural principles and the core design features, providing the vision for where the system needs to go, and striving to maintain its integrity as it evolves. The Systems Architect has significant experience and understanding of the core disciplines for specific projects or programs, and familiarity with the business domain.

- Create and maintain the technical roadmap for the system in keeping with the Product Line strategy.
- Interface with the user and other stakeholders to determine their evolving needs.
- Generate the highest level of system requirements, based on stakeholder needs and constraints such as cost and scheduling, in collaboration with the Product Champion. Ensure that requirement are consistent, complete, correct and operationally defined.
- Perform cost-benefit analyses to determine whether requirements are best met by manual, software or hardware functions. Make maximum use of commercial or developed components.
- Allocate requirements into discrete partitions such that a minimum of communications is needed among partitions and between the user and the system.
- Interface with architects on related systems to ensure the system architecture fits within the overall product road maps, and define interfaces for information exchange with other systems and software.
- Partition large systems into subsystems and components, each of which can be handled by a single engineer or team of engineers or subordinate architect.
- Ensure maximum architecture quality is achieved.
- Perform technical risk management on the system level.
- Generate acceptance test requirements together with the designers, test engineers and the user, to determine that all of the high-level requirements have been met.
- Generate models, an early user guide and prototypes to keep the user and the engineers up to date and in agreement on the system to be provided as it is evolving.
- Coordinate design and integrity between system elements. Recognize when interface impacts might occur and take early action to avoid problems.
