Wood is currently recruiting for a Material Controller - Expression of Interest - 6 months to join its Singapore business unit, focusing on managing, tracking, and coordinating all materials, equipment, spare parts, and consumables required for construction and commissioning activities on an onshore/nearshore oil & gas facility in Basra, Iraq.
This is a full-time onsite position in Basra, Iraq, with travel requirement.
Note: This role is for a short-term basis for a period of 6 months with a potential of extension

Job Purpose
The Material Controller is responsible for managing, tracking, and coordinating all materials, equipment, spare parts, and consumables required for construction and commissioning activities. This includes receiving, inspection, warehousing, issuing, and ensuring proper documentation as per project requirements. The role supports overall site efficiency and ensures materials arrive and are distributed to work fronts on time.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all incoming materials including receiving, offloading, inspection, tagging, and storage.
- Maintain accurate inventory records for construction and commissioning materials.
- Coordinate with procurement, logistics, warehouse, and construction teams for material availability.
- Verify Material Receiving Reports (MRR), packing lists, and delivery notes.
- Track shortages, damaged goods, and non-conformities with QA/QC.
- Ensure proper storage conditions for electrical, mechanical, piping, and structural materials.
- Implement warehouse layout and material preservation protocols.
- Monitor expiry dates, humidity control, and preservation activities for sensitive materials (e.g., valves, gaskets, instruments).
- Issue materials to construction teams based on Material Take-Offs (MTO) and approved requisitions.
- Ensure traceability of piping components, fittings, welding materials, and tagged items.
- Coordinate with site planners and construction supervisors to support daily workfront requirements.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly material availability reports.
- Update material management systems such as SAP, Oracle, SmartPlant Materials (SPM), MATMAN, or similar.
- Maintain records for material receipts, issues, stock levels, and transfers.
- Prepare material reconciliation reports for project close-out.
- Ensure proper documentation aligned with project specifications and audit requirements.
- Coordinate with freight forwarders, customs, and trucking teams for inbound materials.
- Track material shipments, expedite critical items, and resolve logistics barriers.
- Work closely with QA/QC for inspection releases and NCR resolution.
- Ensure safe unloading and handling of materials, including heavy lifts.
- Enforce warehouse safety practices, including forklift/machine operations, PPE, and housekeeping.
- Participate in safety toolbox talks and ensure compliance with site HSE procedures.

Expected:
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Engineering, or related field.
Professional Experience
- 10-12+ years experience in material control within oil & gas construction or EPC projects.
- Strong background in piping, mechanical, electrical, and structural material categories.
- Experience working in Iraq / Middle East remote sites is preferred.
- Knowledge of international codes and specifications for materials.
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of inventory management systems (SAP, Oracle, SPM).
- Understanding of MTOs, bill of materials, and engineering drawings.
- Strong MS Excel reporting and documentation skills.
- Familiarity with preservation procedures and vendor documentations.
