T he Mission Systems Operations Contract (MSOC) at the Johnson Space Center is seeking a Voice Engineer with a working knowledge of voice communication systems, video processing and distribution, and GPS timing systems. The applicant will be required to support mission, simulation, and testing activities in the Mission Control Center (MCC), Mission Training Complex (MTC), and Space Vehicle Mockup Facility (SVMF). Some activities may be considered Mission Critical/Complex and require support during off nominal (M-F, 8-5) hours, weekends, or holidays. This position may require business travel.
The selected applicant will be required to support project design working groups, develop critical design review inputs to system engineering, perform project material and labor cost assessment/estimates, and support design presentations to contract management and the NASA customer. The selected applicant will be required to perform implementation of approved designs, support development of project schedules, provide status to contract management and project engineering, and coordinate implementation efforts with the integration and maintenance teams as well as other project stakeholders. The selected applicant will be required to initiate material requests for procurement of system hardware prior to implementation and provide status of the material delivery. The selected applicant will be required to generate/update configuration management documents as part of the implementation process including cabinet/console drawings, facility floor plans, cable running lists, cross-connect wire lists, Engineering Instructions (EIs), and Subsystem Readiness Tests (SSRTs). The applicant will work in a team environment, and must possess good interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written. The ideal candidate will have a strong drive to apply themselves and continually update his/her skill base, is team oriented, and works to develop and apply good problem-solving skills.
Responsibilities may include:
• Assist in the design, development, sustaining, and maintenance of engineering documentation (databases and drawings) and generation of instructions to change (install, modify, update) the various Mission Control Center (MCCS), Mission Training Complex (MTC), and Space Vehicle Mockup Facility (SVMF) voice, video, and timing systems, including MCCS flight control rooms and Ops Suite consoles and Training Systems Instructor Operator System rooms
• Support the design, development, testing, and deployment of Video, Voice, and Timing Systems
• Respond to and resolve technical issues as needed
• Report on technical work progress, issues, impediments, etc.
• Support integration of engineering hardware into the MCC, MTC, and SVMF environments
• Translate NASA customer operations concepts and functional requirements into engineering design details.
• Identify hardware components, develop parts lists, and generate material procurement requests for acquisition of equipment and materials.
• Support project level planning activities and provide project schedule inputs
• Be able to communicate effectively with internal team members and external NASA customer
• Generation of technical instructions for implementation
• Communicate and coordinate with team leader, as well as MSOC management as needed
• Comply with the MSOC contract and NASA/JSC/MSD direction, policies, and procedures
• Make improvements and suggestions to advance the overall engineering processes in place
Education:
• BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology, Engineering Technology, or related discipline
Desired Qualifications
• An understanding of voice, video, and timing systems
• 3+ years or more of experience in these systems is a plus
• Good problem solving and analytical skills
• Strong communication skills inclusive of low level technical details with peers and summary level to management
• Master Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent is a definite plus
• Cisco CCNA or CCNP certification is highly desirable
• CTS or CompTIA certification would be beneficial
• Demonstrated work experience to receive task assignments, work autonomously and provide periodic status to team members
• Demonstrated experience working system anomalies during mission-critical periods of operation through problem resolution
• Familiarity with IP-based Voice and Video system architectures
• Familiarity with Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) voice systems
• Familiarity with audio codecs (G.711, G.729)
• Familiarity with telephony system (Loop/Ground Start, SIP, Asterisk)
• Familiarity with telecommunications carrier interfaces (TDM, IP)
• Familiarity with mission audio recorder systems
• Familiarity with Analog/Digital audio conversion and distribution equipment
• Familiarity with IP video streaming formats and decoding techniques
• Familiarity with video interface types (HDMI, SDSDI, HDSDI) and resolutions (720p, 1080p, 4K/UHD
