Job Description:

Our purpose is to bring together people, energy and markets to power and navigate a changing world. In a time of constant change and possibility we need new talent to pursue commercial opportunities, fuelled by world-class insight and expertise. We're always striving for more innovative digital solutions, sustainable outcomes and closer collaboration across our company and beyond, and you could be part of that too.

At bp, we're transforming digital capability across our Trading & Shipping organisation, enabling better insights, smarter decisions, and more sustainable outcomes. Our Digital Trading Analytics team powers the models, data flows, and platforms underpinning bp's global commodity trading business. We are seeking a Technical Business Analyst who brings strong domain understanding, technical acumen, and a user‑focused attitude to help deliver high‑value data products. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and encourage individuals who bring diverse perspectives, experiences, and skills.

About the Role

In this role, you will be central to delivering data access and analytics capabilities-particularly through the Analytics Data Workbench (ADW), bp's strategic data platform for trading analytics. You will collaborate with traders, analysts, data scientists, engineers, and product teams to understand business workflows, simplify complex data processes, and guide the design of scalable data solutions. You will represent ADW to users and leadership, ensuring products deliver clear value and align with bp's broader digital strategy.

Key Accountabilities:

Customer & Business Focus

  • Conduct in‑depth research on customer needs, market trends, and competitive landscape to inform and enhance product strategy.
  • Build strong relationships with users across trading, analytics, and risk, ensuring solutions are practical, valuable, and aligned with workflows.
  • Shape customer‑centric product visions, balancing commercial objectives, regulatory considerations, and user impact.
  • Partner with DevOps and engineering teams to prioritise and deliver outcomes that maximise business value.

Technical & Data Delivery

  • Translate complex data workflows into simplified, scalable solutions for analytics and pre‑deal decision‑making.
  • Influence target-state architecture, contributing to designs that are secure, resilient, and able to scale across bp's trading ecosystem.
  • Support key technology decisions with a focus on reusability, enterprise scalability, and long‑term sustainability.
  • Use your understanding of Software Development, DevOps, service design, and security considerations to support product delivery.

Agile & Transformational Leadership

  • Drive planning, delivery, and continuous improvement within cross‑functional engineering squads.
  • Mentor teams in agile ways of working, promoting transparency, iteration, and user‑first thinking.
  • Facilitate reflection and improvement sessions, strengthening collaboration and team efficiency.
  • Confidently communicate product strategy, trade-offs, and technical decisions to both technical and non‑technical audiences.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business, Economics, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related STEM discipline.

Essential Experience & Technical Skills:

Trading Domain Knowledge

  • Hands-on experience with market and fundamentals data used in pre-deal analytics, such as financial curve data, continuous contracts, and physical/derivative instruments.
  • Understanding of trading instruments (Futures, Swaps, Options, Forwards, Physical contracts) and their commercial purpose.
  • Familiarity with energy trading markets across commodities: oil, refined products, gas, power, and low carbon energy.
  • Exposure to Price Reporting Agency (PRA) methodologies, benchmarks, and pricing mechanisms.
  • Awareness of the end-to-end trading lifecycle and key risk and control concepts (VaR, P&L, exposure, mark‑to‑market).

Technical & Data Skills

  • Strong proficiency in Python, especially Pandas for data preparation and analysis.
  • Solid SQL skills (Databricks SQL advantageous) for manipulating structured datasets.
  • Understanding of data modelling, including ERDs, object models, lifecycle concepts, and relational modelling.
  • Experience using data APIs, Python libraries, and handling timeseries datasets.
  • Experience creating or supporting Power BI dashboards and working within structured Power BI development lifecycles.
  • Familiarity with Dataiku, including building workflows with visual and code recipes, using automation nodes, and (optionally) basic ML features.
  • Ability to produce clear, useful technical documentation for self‑service communities.

Desirable Attributes

  • Highly accountable, self‑motivated, and comfortable navigating ambiguity in a fast‑moving environment.
  • Strong customer service attitude and ability to work effectively with global teams across cultures.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage changing priorities and technical complexity.
  • Able to move seamlessly between critical thinking and hands‑on execution.
  • Knowledge of agile practices, configuration management, security standards, release processes, documentation practices, and quality principles.
