Senior Project Accountant

Overview
We are supporting a leading international organisation in the energy and infrastructure sector in the search for a Senior Project Accountant. This is a key role within the finance team, providing expert financial oversight across major capital and operational projects.

The successful candidate will work closely with project, commercial and leadership teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, strong cost control, and effective financial planning across complex, multi-stakeholder environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead month-end, quarter-end and year-end close activities for project and operational accounts in line with established financial controls and procedures

• Manage and resolve complex or non-routine accounting matters, providing specialist project accounting advice where required

• Liaise with internal stakeholders and external partners to obtain and validate financial information and support commercial agreements, billing structures and financial models

• Coordinate with asset and partner finance teams to ensure accurate close-out activities and stakeholder reporting

• Prepare and review internal and external cost and operating reports, analysing direct and allocated costs and investigating variances or discrepancies

• Support monthly cost reviews with senior leadership and follow up on agreed actions

• Maintain and reconcile project cost tracking, internal order structures and work breakdown reporting

• Review project invoices, cost allocations and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with internal governance and approval limits

• Analyse inventory movements and provide clear explanations for variances

• Prepare project accruals, adjustments and account reconciliations, and respond to stakeholder queries on financial performance against budget

• Produce cash flow forecasts and manage project funding requirements, including cash calls and billing analysis

• Develop annual planning and budgeting inputs, including resource assumptions, expenditure phasing and alignment with project schedules

• Prepare management budget packs and provide analysis comparing current plans with previous submissions

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or a related discipline; or

• A degree in any field combined with a recognised professional accounting qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA, CMA or equivalent

Experience and Knowledge

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in accounting or finance, ideally within a project, capital-intensive or multi-entity environment

• Strong understanding of financial controls, reporting cycles and project cost management

• Experience working with enterprise financial systems (ERP) and financial reporting tools

• Advanced Excel skills and strong financial analysis capability

• Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting and cash management processes

• Confident communicator, able to work effectively with both finance and non-finance stakeholders

• Professional written and spoken English
