GE Aerospace Research is looking for an Inspection Technologies and AI Intern for our Advanced Manufacturing Lab. As an intern in the Advanced Manufacturing Lab, you will collaborate with leading researchers and scientists on developing manufacturing and inspection processes for GE Aerospace and its customers. The role focuses on the research and development of cutting-edge non-destructive evaluation (NDE)/inspection solutions leveraging computer vision and AI principles. Success in this position requires knowledge in the principles of nondestructive evaluation, signal/image processing, and deep learning.

The pay range for this position is $1,000-$2,000 USD weekly. The specific weekly rate offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate's experience, their education, and the work location. As an intern in the Advanced Manufacturing Lab, you will collaborate with leading researchers and scientists on developing manufacturing and inspection processes for GE Aerospace and its customers. The role focuses on the research and development of cutting-edge non-destructive evaluation (NDE)/inspection solutions leveraging computer vision and AI principles. Success in this position requires knowledge in the principles of nondestructive evaluation, signal/image processing, and deep learning.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Contribute to research and development activities in the fields of inspection/nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, image and signal processing, computer vision, and scientific machine learning.
- Work with an interdisciplinary team of researchers to demonstrate proof of concept of novel instrumentation and analysis tools to solve inspection problems in the aerospace industry.
- Participate in defining inspection project requirements, formulate plans for assigned tasks, and work directly with project leaders to track progress.
- Effectively communicate results by preparing written reports and delivering oral presentations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Current enrollment in a full-time Ph.D. program at a U.S. university pursuing degree in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics, or related engineering field.
- Permanent legal authorization to work in the US is required. This role is restricted to U.S. persons. GE will require proof of status prior to employment.
- Willingness to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
- Minimum GPA 3.0 / 4.0 scale.
DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS
- Strong understanding of NDE with specific expertise in ultrasound or thermography.
- Strong knowledge of signal processing, computer vision, and deep learning.
- Medium-Advanced level proficiency in Python.
- Experience with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch and Tensorflow.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with ability to conduct independent research.
- Demonstrate knowhow and experience in (1) thermographic and/or ultrasonic NDE/inspection, (2) signal/image processing, and (3) deep learning through research projects at the university or in the industry with record of publications in peer-reviewed journal or conference proceedings.
- Strong influencing skills with project teams and leadership.
