Job Description:

Role Synopsis:

The Bunker Buyer leads the end‑to‑end procurement of marine fuels for the fleet, ensuring commercially sound, operationally robust and compliant bunker supply while interpreting pricing data and market indices to guide procurement strategy and execution. The role combines hands‑on purchasing with clear accountability for commercial outcomes, including the structuring and management of term supply agreements, delivering market insight, and providing operational mentorship as a key interface between vessels, operators, technical teams, charterers and internal & external suppliers.

Responsibilities include optimizing bunker intake for voyage planning, implementing competitive spot and prompt purchases, analyzing forward demand and exposure, supervising supplier performance and market developments, and driving continuous improvement. The role also handles quality and quantity claims, explores structured products to navigate market volatility and exposure risks, maintains strong partner relationships, supports lower‑carbon fuel initiatives, participates in industry forums, and ensures full compliance with Group Control and Compliance requirements.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Implement competitive spot and timely bunker purchases and implement and handle term supply solutions in line with business requirements and market conditions, including the evaluation of pricing structures, index linkages, premiums, critical issue mechanisms, and commercial optionality.
  • Analyse bunker price indices, forward curves, historical trends and premiums across fuel grades and supply modes to support efficient purchasing decisions and exposure management.
  • Assess term contract performance versus spot market benchmarks to ensure continued commercial competitiveness.
  • Supervise and explain price movements, basis risk and index differentials to internal partners, ensuring transparency of bunker cost drivers.
  • Work closely with charterers, vessel operators and masters to optimize bunker intake and support forward voyage planning, ensuring safe, efficient and cost-effective fuel usage.
  • Perform Purchase order/invoice/delivery order matching and submission to accounts for payment, resolve discrepancies and handling claims.
  • Understand relevant business and trading strategies to deliver innovative bunker procurement solutions that generate incremental value for bp.
  • Provide accurate, timely forward demand data and exposure analysis to support efficient fuel purchasing for the fleet and wider bp Shipping activities.
  • Deliver relevant and actionable market intelligence on bunker prices, trends, supply dynamics and industry developments to internal partners.
  • Develop and implement bunker procurement strategies that enable effective navigation through market volatility, including the active exploration of structured products and alternative solutions to handle bunker exposure risk.
  • Supervise targets, evaluate bunker supplier performance and provide structured feedback to the business on suppliers, market conditions and industry changes.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external partners, offering mentorship and support to ensure compliance and the most efficient fuel purchasing strategies.
  • Handle bunker quality and quantity claims end-to-end, negotiating settlements and ensuring outcomes that protect bp's commercial and operational interests.
  • Advise Charterers on bunker-related clauses in charterparties to ensure bp's contractual and commercial position is protected.
  • Actively participate in current and future projects developed to improve processes and procedures, maintaining awareness of digital and market developments in the bunkering space.
  • Proactively engage with bp sustainability objectives, working with internal and external partners to identify and advance opportunities for lower-carbon fuels and emissions reduction.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of bunker markets, procedures, specifications and evolving industry regulations and standards.
  • Represent bp in relevant industry bodies and forums when required.
  • Conduct all activities in full compliance with bp Group Control and Compliance requirements.
  • Provide support to new or existing projects as the need arises, including initiatives outside of day-to-day responsibilities.

Essential Experience:

  • Experience within a trading, shipping or integrated energy organization, with exposure to wider trading strategies and commercial optimization.
  • At least 5 years' experience in marine fuel (bunkers) procurement, including execution of spot and prompt purchases across multiple ports or regions.
  • Experience structuring or optimising term bunker contracts to balance price certainty, flexibility and exposure management.
  • Demonstrated experience working with bunker price indices and assessments (e.g. Platts MOPS, Bunkerwire), including analysis of premiums, differentials and time-series data to support commercial decision-making.
  • Shown experience negotiating and handling bunker term supply contracts, including understanding and evaluation of pricing mechanisms linked to market indices, premiums and delivery basis.
  • Experience assessing term versus spot procurement strategies based on pricing, exposure and operational requirements.
  • Strong solid understanding of global bunker markets, fuel pricing mechanisms, specifications (ISO 8217), and supplier landscape.
  • Demonstrated experience working closely with vessel operators, masters and fleet teams to optimize bunker intake and support forward voyage planning.
  • Experience developing and implementing bunker procurement strategies to handle price volatility and supply risk.
  • Track record of handling supplier performance, supervising targets and providing structured commercial feedback.
  • Hands-on experience handling bunker quality and quantity disputes, including negotiation of claims and settlements.
  • Strong partner management skills with the ability to act as a commercial interface between operations, technical teams, chartering and external suppliers.

Desirable Experience:

  • Knowledge of, or experience with, structured products or alternative mechanisms used to handle bunker price exposure and risk.
  • Exposure to lower-carbon marine fuels and shipping decarbonization initiatives.
  • Prior experience in sourcing and negotiating LNG bunker supply agreements.
  • Experience contributing to process improvement, digitalization or transformation initiatives within procurement or operations.
  • Understanding of charterparty bunker clauses and ability to advise Charterers to protect commercial position.
  • Familiarity with digital bunker procurement tools, data analytics or reporting platforms.
  • Participation in industry bodies, forums or working groups related to bunkering or shipping.
  • Experience providing informal leadership, coaching or support to less experienced colleagues.
  • Awareness of emerging regulatory and market developments impacting marine fuels and emissions.
